DVD Reviews of The Omega Man

DVD Review: Charles Manson goes to Woodstock
Summary: 3 Stars

I wasn't particularly impressed despite the fact that I always enjoy Charleton Heston. The Director/Producers of this film seem to have been interested in producing something of a hippie movie, therefore the movie looks dated, indeed.

Heston, who suspects he is the last bona fide human on earth doesn't fit the hippie image, of course, but he does spend time watching reruns of the movie 'Woodstock'. His adversaries are the albinoid, diseased survivors of an epidemic that has destroyed civilization. They are religiously fundamentalist--against the 'machine'--and are zombioid and lethal. They are led by the Manson-like Mathias, who refers to his flock--again Manson-like--as 'The Family.'

Well, it turns out the Heston isn't the only one left. There is a handful of surviviors who bear all the appearances of members of a hippie commune. Heston's love interest is a black woman who looks amazingly just like the 60s-70s radical Angela Davis. Alas, it isn't to be. Angela turns into a zombie; Heston is speared by Mathias and the hippies go off to never-never land.

DVD Review: Holy Moses...One of Hestons Best!
Summary: 5 Stars

Of those reviewers that felt that this film fell short of Hestons other Sci Fi films--shame on them. We, who have seen this one know the plot...Charlton Heston plays a government scientist that holds the key to survival...the antidote to the biological weapon his government help create, a deadly plague that either kills or genetically mutates the survivors of the disease and drives them insane. He, Dr. Nevill, is Satan to the mutated survivors--activly pursuing and killing them (putting them out of their misery). Hey--it's them or him--I vote for survival. I think the only thing I would do different is move out of the city, away from those REALLY creepy half dead zombies.I understand Hestons caracter refused to give in to them and stay where he was..but......The real point is--even though this movie is based on the R. Mattheson book--I am Legend--and not really close to the original story..who cares? The movie is good on it's own. Put it this way...unless I am in bed and can pull the covers over my head--I still won't watch this film downstaires in the dark by myself...but then neither my wife or kids will watch this with me either....It is a bitter-sweet film and you almost feel releaved rather than sad when Heaston is killed in the end--he was the one who was truely tormented.

DVD Review: Chuck vs the Photophobes
Summary: 3 Stars

Gimme Heston vs. crazy villains any day. This is one of the big 70's Sci-Fi movies. Along with "Planet of the Apes" and "Soylent Green," these movies made me a big Sci-Fi fan. It's a little cheesy, but it holds up well. one & 1/2 thumbs up.

DVD Review: 2.5 stars out of 4
Summary: 3 Stars

The Bottom Line:

One of the most dated movies of all time and a completely laughable adaptation of Matheson's novel, The Omega Man is really pretty awful except for the fact that it offers so much campy fun: the obvious stunt doubles, the terrible acting, the afros, the white makeup, the dialogue, the hastily-tacked-on Christ analogy...I love it!

DVD Review: Well worth it!
Summary: 4 Stars

There are plenty of plot reviews here for those who like all the detail. So if you want to read critical reviews this is not one of those.

IMO this film had a much better story than I Am Legend. The 70's feel is all through the movie in the actors, the clothes, the scenes and dialog. Charlton Heston acts with his usual larger than life gusto which defines his movies. My only complaint was that the "madness" which befalls "Family" members when they change was really not explained well. The sexuality between Heston and Cash was probably quite daring in 1971.

Oh...don't miss those crazy one-color "Track-Suits".

Description of The Omega Man

Welcome to the future. Biological war has decimated life on Earth. Los Angeles is a windswept ghost town where Robert Neville tools his convertible through sunlit streets foraging for supplies. And makes damn sure he gets undercover before sundown, when other "inhabitants" emerge. The Omega Man adapts Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend into a high-impact, high-tension saga of a fate not far removed from reality. Charlton Heston is Neville, fending off attacks by The Family, sinister neopeople spawned by the plague. He also becomes a man with a mission after meeting Lisa (Rosalind Cash), another unifected survivor - and guardian of some healthy children representing our species' hope.
