DVD Reviews of The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 8 (Hobgoblins / The Phantom Planet / Monster A-Go Go / The Dead Talk Back)DVD Review: classic mst3k Summary: 5 Starsa hilairious instalment to the mst3k collection, containg one of the series best episodes hobgoblins.
DVD Review: Anything MST3K is great! Summary: 5 StarsAnything MST3K on dvd is worth the money. We loved all the movies riffed on this set but our favorite I think is "The Dead Talk Back". The comments by Mike Nelson and the bots are especially funny.
DVD Review: I beg to differ... Summary: 4 Stars...With most of the reviews. The Dead Talk Back is may favorite of the four, far better than Hobgoblin and Phantom Planet. Because of those two I'm not going to bother with this set unless the price comes way down. I have TDTB and MAGG recorded and the quality is sufficient that I don't yearn for the official copies. Phantom Planet is relentlessly banal and Hobgoblins is just too stupid to deprive any joy from. I don't know why I'm not as bored with TDTB as most people seem to be, it just has a certain incompetent charm that I can appreciate. Monster-A-Go-Go is certainly tedious but the riffing is good enough to make it reasonably fun.
DVD Review: It's All About Hobgoblins! Summary: 4 Stars3 old B&W 1960's suspense/sci-fi films fill out this set with minimal hilarity, but the 1987 crapfest "Hobgoblins" makes Vol. 8 a comedy gem!
I learned something about my MST3K preferences while viewing the movies in this set: I prefer Mike episodes. I can see the appeal of the Joel years, but they are a little too slow for my taste.
Now let's get to the movies:
"Phantom Planet" is classic sci-fi fun and manages to keep it snappy in the story department, while providing enough silly plot points and special effects for Mike and the Bots to tear it a new one. Favorite moments include the constant KFC/Fried Chicken references the crew throw out every time an exterior shot of the planet shows up.
"Monster A Go-Go" was my first exposure to a Joel episode and although the crew does a good job making fun of the lack of "horror" in the film, I miss the sarcasm and bite of Mike's comments. The action figure host segment was pretty funny, though.
"The Dead Talk Back" is right up there with the "Hamlet" episode on my list of movies so boring even MST3K can't save them. The film is just a bunch of people talking and none of them are wacky or weird-looking enough to allow for any great riffs. The Jerry Garcia endless guitar solo in the host segments was pretty hypnotic, but overall this movie should never have been released from it's obscurity-it should have been left in the vault with the...
"Hobgoblins" This is classic, corny 80's goodness with spandex, hairspray and all! The host segments are great and the riffing is well fueled by the crappy madness that is this film. My favorite riff comes when the characters are dancing to generic 80's pop and Mike sings: "Hey everybody, yeah it's the 80's, do a lotta coke and vote for Ronald Reagan!" Hi-larity! This is why I watch the show and this is why I buy these DVD sets.
So in the end I've realized I need more Mike and I need more films that were produced from 1980 forward. Thanks volume 8!
DVD Review: Satisfactory Collection Summary: 3 StarsThis is a satisfactory collection of episodes. However, Phantom Planet, Monster A-Go Go, and The Dead Talk Back are rather lack-luster affairs. It's no fault of the guys, who are spot on. It's just that the movies are painful, dry, and boring, and tend to drag down the entire experience.
Phantom Planet includes all the convoluted 60s science you could ever want, not to mention meteorites that look like crispy chicken and a downright hilarious villain. The villains -- who look like a kind of alien dog -- are a source of constant hilarity. I only wish they showed up earlier in the story. As it is, it's a rather straight-forward, common sort of B-movie, and is only laugh-out-loud in parts.
Monster A-Go Go is downright awful. The guys are hilarious, but sitting through the movie itself is another matter entirely. It has a narrator who discusses every single plot point at length, and boy, does he grate on your nerves. The monster isn't really funny or goofy as much as he just Fails (he looks like a mutant Abe Lincoln). The guys, funny as they are, just couldn't rise above the film; it was too awful. If you watch this disc for anything, watch it for the Circus on Ice short, which is drop-dead hilarious!
The Dead Talk Back is better after one or two viewings... but it still isn't very palatable. Just like Monster A-Go Go, it seems to have a narrator who doesn't know when to shut up. It's a listless, painful film and lies comatose until the last act, when it jerks and flops aimlessly around like a boneless person shocked by the household current. Even its short can't save it. Who thought that riffing on selling freezers was a good idea? Again, the guys do their best throughout, but it's not enough to overcome the awful boredom inherent in both film and short.
The true winner here is Hobgoblins (a Gremlins ripoff), the touching story of how a bunch of young adults struggle against evil stuffed animals. Words cannot properly express how wonderful this MST3k episode is. The rake fight alone is delightful, much less the strip club in a school cafeteria for no reason and the ridiculous-looking Hobgoblins themselves. This will most certainly be one of the gems in your collection.
If you're a die-hard fan, you should grab this set. It's definitely not the best collection, but it's solid. There are some good laughs even in the weakest episodes. Still, it's a little too mediocre for the casual fan to spend this much money on it.
Description of The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 8 (Hobgoblins / The Phantom Planet / Monster A-Go Go / The Dead Talk Back)Journey once more through the portals on the Satellite of Love to the best of the worst that cinema has to offer. Joel, Mike, and their "robot friends" do another hilarious orbit around four full-length features, presenting the kind of skits and wisecracking commentary that are clearly written by the culturally insane.
