DVD Reviews of The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition

DVD Review: Still Funny after all these years
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie in the theaters as a teenager, I took my little brothers and sister to see it and it was so good we stayed in the theater for a second showing. My friends and I that watched it when it arrived were all laughing and enjoyed the movie immensly. Something this good never goes out of style.

DVD Review: Misguided attempt at PC - Boycott!
Summary: 2 Stars

First - I love this movie. One of my favorites ever. Five stars, easily.

So why the 2-star review?

I bought it recently for my kids, and lo and behold, one of the best scenes is not there! Where is the part where Kermit, feeling forsaken by the departure of Miss Piggy, drowns his sorrows in a piano tune with Rolf the Dog?

From other reviews I read here, it sounds like this scene was cut because of some humorous references to alcohol (which probably only adults will understand, anyway). I suppose someone thought this was the "politically correct" thing to do. They're saving our children from becoming alcoholics!

I saw this movie when it originally came out in theaters in 1979. I was eight. I had the soundtrack album and listened to it hundreds of times. I am not an alcoholic! Nor am I afraid my own kids (ages 8 and 5) would be somehow warped by witnessing the scene that was cut.

Boycott this movie. Don't buy it or any others made by this company. And write them to tell them why. We don't need corporations to "protect" us from ourselves.

DVD Review: What a memory
Summary: 5 Stars

I was so pleased with this product. It arrived in no time. I grew up with the muppets and have the original on VHS, what a thrill it was to find it here!!!! Great service from shipper, will definately buy from seller again.

DVD Review: The best movie in the entire Muppets feature films series!,
Summary: 5 Stars

I was only 10 years old when this movie came out, in '79, and after seeing it once or twice, in the theaters, I was hooked on it! Then, when it was shown on cable, I recorded it on video cassette so that I could watch it whenever I want. Then, a few years ago, after it came out on DVD, in 2001, I ordered my own copy of it. I love this movie for many reasons: the multitude of Muppets characters such as Kermit The Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo The Great, Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem, Rowlf the Dog, etc., the many guest stars like Steve Martin, James Coburn, Paul Williams, Carol Kane, Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, etc., the plot, in which Kermit, after being discovered by a Hollywood agent, played by Dom Deluise, leaves his home in the swamp, heads west to Hollywood & picks up other Muppet friends, along the way, who have the same dream of being famous & in showbiz. But, during the journey, Kermit has to avoid a despicable fellow named Doc Hopper, played by Charles Durning, who wants Kermit as his spokesfrog for a chain of french-fried frog legs restaurants that Hopper's planning to open. I also enjoy the soundtrack, especially songs like "The Rainbow Connection", which was the favorite song of my mom (God rest her soul), "Moving Right Along" and "I'm Going To Go Back There, Someday", which is my favorite song. What I really like is the dialogue, especially the funny lines, such as when Kermit & the Hollywood agent are talking about alligators, and Kermit says, "Read my lips, all-i-ga-tors!" or when Kermit & Fozzie go into the church where Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem are playing, they look at each other & Fozzie says, "They don't look like Presbyterians to me!" This is a wonderful movie & I recommend it to anyone that likes the Muppets, comedy movies, or just movies, in general, because, this movie is terrific!

DVD Review: Still A Great Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of those movies that is timeless. I watched it with my young grandchildren recently (ages 5 & 6) and they laughed their heads off. This was a great way to introduce them to the muppets as they had never seen them before. They wanted to watch more muppet movies.

Description of The Muppet Movie - Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition

They're irreverent, irrepressible, and downright irresistible. They're the Muppets! -- starring in their first full-length movie. See how their meteoric rise to fame and fortune began: with a rainbow, a song . . . and a Frog. After a fateful meeting with a big-time talent agent, Kermit the Frog heads for Hollywood dreaming of showbiz. Along the way, Fozzie Bear, the Great Gonzo, and the dazzling Miss Piggy join him in hopes of becoming film stars too. But all bets are off when Kermit falls into the clutches of Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), a fast-food mogul seeking to promote his French-fried frog-leg franchise! Featuring Oscar(R)-nominated music (1980, Best Original Song "The Rainbow Connection," Best Original Score) and side-splitting appearances by some of the biggest names on the silver screen -- including Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Orson Welles, and more! --this fully restored and remastered 50th Anniversary Edition of THE MUPPET MOVIE is a critically acclaimed comedy classic your family will treasure for all time. This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of The Wizard of Oz, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series The Muppet Show. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on The Little Mermaid and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Williams did not work on the future Muppet films until A Muppet Christmas Carol. His contributions made these films the best of the Muppet series. --Doug Thomas
Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clich?s and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker
