DVD Reviews of The Mist

DVD Review: The best horror movie I've seen in a LONG time.
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember seeing the trailer for this while seeing another movie.
I remember thinking, oh goody another Steven King disaster.
And let's face it; this movie had the potential to be a complete mess.
The monsters, the Jim Jones cult lady, I was expecting the worst considering how many of King's books have been massacred by Hollywood. Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary anyone?
What saved this movie?
This is what happens when you put really good actors in a b movie.
The acting and the directing were spot on perfect.
The FX were soooo much better than I was expecting.
This movie really reminds me of Cloverfield minus the shaky camera.
And unlike Cloverfield, I actually found myself cheering for the human cast instead of wanting and waiting for the monster to EAT the cast, like Cloverfield.
I'm rather surprised by Tom Jane being cast as the leading man, the last time I saw him was in Deep Blue Sea as the shark wrangler.
He was perfect in this movie and is a much better actor than I thought he would be.
Oh, and it's always nice to see Mrs. Claven (Cliff's mom in Cheers) on the big screen.
She rocked, especially the can throwing scene.
But the real reason I loved this movie is the same reason so many of you disliked it.
The ending.
I'd put the ending right up there with the ending from Open Water.
It was a huge risk for the filmmakers to go in this direction, and I applaud them for it.
I have never read the novella but I guess it hints at the ending that the director chose.
If you listen to that scene with Director Commentary on, he says, King liked the ending and wished he had thought of it first because that is how he would have ended the story.
And really, would simply driving away into the mist have been a good ending? No.
One of the best and most emotional endings ever.
I have to tip my hat to Tom J. for being able to pull that scene off, I don't think many actors could have done it justice.
The music from Dead Can Dance was a brilliant idea and complimented the ending perfectly.
This movie will stick with me for a long time just because of the last ten minutes.
Sometimes the real horror isn't the crazy guy in the Halloween mask or in this movies case, the scary monsters lurking in the mist.
The real horror is the choices that we make and then having to live with the consequences of those choices.
Brilliant, simply brilliant.
A must see?
For the ending alone, yes.
Highly recommended.

DVD Review: Darabont's version of "The Mist"
Summary: 3 Stars

I have not read the original Stephen King short story on which this movie is based but if what I heard about it, if the original ending was retained then I don't think I would give this film a recommendation. Considering the tight budget this film was made under, though, the results were not bad though the best adaptations of King's stories will always be "Carrie", "The Shining" & "The Dead Zone" (a terrific Christopher Walken performance w/understated direction by Cronenberg). Definitely more horrifying than the various insects that invade the group in the story is the religious fanatic played brilliantly by Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden. In fact if this film had better distribution and a larger box office gross than it did, I'm sure Ms Harden would get another Oscar nomination. Thomas Jane, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn & Francis Sternhagen also contribute fine performances to this B-thriller which held my attention. And of course, the ending is really a kicker which I won't reveal--just check this out if you like King or are in the mood for a good horror thriller!!

DVD Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

My g/f and I LOVED this movie. The best horror/suspense movie I've seen in many years. Well acted, rich characters, good special effects. And a ballsy ending that Stephen King even said he liked better than his own. A testimonial like that says it all.

DVD Review: Very good but could have been made even better
Summary: 3 Stars

I have not yet read Stephen King's original story, although I do know how it ends. I did find like many others, the film's ending to be a great shock. While the original story ends inconclusively, at least it was at least to me preferable to the abrupt film finale. There are many great and gripping moments in the film and the acting is generally very good and certainly above average for a film of this type. Marcia Gay Harden is excellent as "Mrs. Carmody" the religious fanatic. The film is generally well-mounted and quite suspenseful throughout. A bit puzzling though are the fates of several key characters who leave the supermarket to venture out into the mist and are not seen or mentioned again. The cause of the mist is not actually given either, only guessed at. The film is very good but not perfect and could have been made a whole lot better. Definitely worth seeing though.

DVD Review: The Mist
Summary: 4 Stars

Suffice it to say I was impressed. This is one of the best transfers of a Stephen King story in many years. The acting, screenplay, sets, and special effects were great. You feel you are part of the action. You will identify with this group of people being stranded in a grocery store with only a thin plate glass window keeping the horrible creatures outside from devouring them. I know I was on the edge of my seat and found myself drawn in by the great character development. The trip of a small party to the Drugstore next door was harrowing. Each person in the store was very believable. Including the religious zealot that was drawing people to her camp for the "End of Days". Once her camp starts snatching people to throw to the creatures a small group lights out to find rescue. The ending is remarkable and somewhat poetic. I highly recommend this if you enjoy horror SciFi movies. Great quality DVD with good replayability. If you enjoyed this be sure to see "Maximum Overdrive", "Phantoms", and "The Relic".

Description of The Mist

Writer-director Frank Darabont, who showcased the softer side of Stephen King in his film adaptations of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, turns to darker material for The Mist, his latest King adaptation about a group of ordinary townspeople trapped in a supermarket by a mysterious fogbank. Thomas Jane is top-billed as a Maine illustrator who attempts to calm the frightened shoppers, but his job is cut out for him from the get-go, first by the discovery of malevolent creatures lurking in the mist, and then by the mad mutterings of Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a local eccentric who calls for Old Testament-style sacrifices to appease the supernatural forces. Darabont delivers monster movie thrills and understated social commentary with equal skill, and he's well supported by his cast (which includes Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, William Sadler and Jeffrey DeMunn) and the vivid special effects by KNB EFX, which effectively mix CGI with models and stop-motion animation (the terrific monsters were designed by legendary comic book artist Bernie Wrightson). And for those curious about how the novella's downbeat ending has translated to film, suffice it to say that Darabont's conclusion is at once different and more unsettling than King's. --Paul Gaita
From legendary frightmaster Stephen King and Academy Award nominated director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption The Green Mile) comes one of the most tense and terrifying films since The Shining. After a mysterious mist envelops a small New England town a group of locals trapped in a supermarket must battle a siege of otherworldly creatures... and the fears that threaten to tear them apart.System Requirements:Running Time: 126 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR/PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER Rating: R UPC: 796019810586 Manufacturer No: 81058
