DVD Reviews of The Last Templar

DVD Review: 3.5* - Enjoyable adventure flick
Summary: 3 Stars

"The Last Templar" is a made-for-TV adaptation from Raymond Khoury's novel of the same name. I heard from a friend of mine that many liberties were taken with the book, but since I haven't read it, I can't really comment on that aspect. After watching this movie though, I have to say that I found it entertaining, and a lot better than the Librarian series [starring Noah Wyle]. The show is a blend of Romancing the Stone, Indiana Jones and the Da Vinci Code.

In "The Last Templar", Mira Sorvino plays the lead role of archaeologist Tess Chaykin who attends a museum exhibition titled "The Treasures of the Vatican". Whilst there, a band of robbers dressed up like the Knights Templar storm the exhibition and steal the artifacts, including the Cross of Constantine, which had been discovered by Tess' father. A cheesy action sequence follows with Tess charging after the robbers on a horse with a golden crook! I was initially put off by this scene, thinking the rest of the movie was going to have a high dose of cheese as well, but persevered, and was rewarded with quite a fun viewing experience.

The rest of the story sees Tess trying to recover the artifacts, and things heat up when FBI Agent Sean Daley [Scott Foley] keeps intervening. The chemistry between Tess and Sean are part of the charm of this show, and I only wish the writers had paid a bit more attention to the dialogue. The plot progresses with Tess discovering that one of the stolen items was a decoder that could potentially reveal the location of information leading to a lost treasure of the Templars. What ensues is a cat-and-mouse game that takes the main characters all the way to Istanbul, Turkey. The other main characters in this show are Templar expert and Tess' dad's old buddy Bill Vance [Kenneth Welsh], Monsignor de Angelis [Victor Garber] the local head of the Catholic Church and towards the end there is the cameo appearance of veteran actor Omar Sharif as a wise Greek villager spouting philosophy.

I will refrain from elaborating more on the plot so as not to spoil it for viewers - suffice to say that the lost treasure has important repercussions for the Catholic Church. In this sense, there is some similarity to the Da Vinci Code, but the story also reminded me of Indiana Jones, especially in some action sequences like the jeep ride through the Turkish market, as well as Romancing the Stone in the scenes where Tess and Sean indulge in verbal sparring.

The acting was above average, but the script left a lot to be desired. I felt the dialogue was trite and could have done with some fine touches. As for the cinematography, the on-location shots were beautifully done. Final verdict - don't go in expecting too much, and one could be entertained. Definitely not for those who like to nit-pick on points of historical accuracy. I was in the mood for some escapist fare, and this fit the bill nicely.
