DVD Reviews of The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 01 (Shows 1 & 3)DVD Review: It doesn't get better than this... Summary: 5 StarsThese two early episodes of Judy Garland's weekly T.V. series show her at her absolute zenith....looking slim, glamorous, and gorgeous, and singing like no one else could ever come close to! Her versions of Old Man River, As Long As He Needs Me, Come Rain or Come Shine, and When The Sun Comes Out are so emotionally charged and soulful and show her unmatched ability to rip her heart out for her audiences. Mickey Rooney is also very enjoyable, and very affectionate with his old MGM pal. Hearing them ad-lib to old photographs of themselves when they were teenagers is simply charming and full of wit. Liza is also fun to watch in this very early stage of her career, as she is so energetic and full of spunk! These television shows are simply classic, and if some of the intervening segments lag (like the scenes with Jerry Van Dyke), they don't override the greatness and brilliance of the musical numbers.
DVD Review: As long as we need her. Summary: 4 StarsJudy Garland's one foray into series television was not perfect, but that was not entirely her fault. She was more anxious than anyone to make this a success, but the show's producers tweaked and ravaged the show's format so much that it ended up a 'flawed gem' as someone so accurately described earlier. Audiences would've been more than happy to see Ms. Garland just belt out one song after another, but early on her show was a musical variety hybrid, co-starred with 'second banana' dimwit Jerry Van Dyke, and featuring an uneven roster of guest stars. In early 1963 she hit paydirt by featuring her teenage daughter Liza Minnelli, who showed early, raw, talent of her own. Impressive as they are together (performing in burlesque and a medley of pop songs), it is the solo efforts of the 41-year-old mother that really stand out: an up-tempo version of "Come Rain Or Come Shine (staged full-frame to better show off her slimmed down figure)," and a torchy rendition of "As Long As He Needs Me (staged behind a trunk on a darkened runway)." The black-and-white DVD renders a marvelous picture, as these shows are digital transfers from the original, show quality, 2-inch videotapes. Kudos to Pioneer Entertainment!!
DVD Review: Judy Garland Show Volume 1 Summary: 5 StarsJudy's star again, as always, shines bright in these two episodes (1&3) of her television show! Two extra treats of these episodes are Mickey Rooney and Liza Minnili, Judy Garland's daughter. With both you can clearly see Judy's very special bond to each of these individuals! If you simply love Judy Garland, these are a must for any fan! Her shows are perhaps the best body of her work avalible!
DVD Review: A Must Have Summary: 5 StarsAs a child, mum and dad watched the 'Judy Garland Show'on our old b/w 'Admiral' t.v. here in Sydney. Now, almost 40 years later, some of the finest entertainment EVER has been beautifully and obviously lovingly transferred to DVD. The images are sharp and crisp. The Dolby Digital soundtrack is nothing short of sonic sorcery-without being over processed. The production values are extraordinary. It's easy to see why Judy was such an extraordinary talent. A 'must' for any collection.
DVD Review: JUDY'S FINEST PERFORMANCES! NEVER BETTER Summary: 5 StarsThis is absolutely the finest show of both the magic of Judy Garland and the truly awesome technology of DVD! Never have there been performances like these and the digital clarity of the picture and the sound is unbeatable. I could not have conceived of anything like this ever being available and I wish to thank those responsible. This is truly a work of art that has been preserved forever. Awesome video, Awesome quality and the incomparable Awesome Judy!!! Even if you don't like this sort of thing.....I know you'll love it! ***********
Description of The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 01 (Shows 1 & 3)Academy Award and Golden Globe recipient Judy Garland was and still is a super star of her time. She was the consummate performer. Starring in over 40 films, Judy Garland had no limits to her singing and acting talents that included radio, theatre, television, and film. She also starred in her own television series "The Judy Garland Show." In honoring the 35th anniversary of the series and the 30th anniversary of her passing, Pioneer Entertainment is proud to present "The Judy Garland Show" on DVD. In these first two episodes which originally aired between 1963 through 1964, Judy welcomes guests Liza Minelli, Mickey Rooney, Soupy Sales and regular guest Jerry Van Dyke. The first disc in this series showcasing episodes of Garland's star-crossed CBS variety show offers two classic 1963 programs, the first featuring Mickey Rooney, the second presenting Garland's first major performances with daughter Liza Minnelli. Visibly shaking during the opening number of the Rooney hour, Garland nonetheless displays her strength on some awe-inspiring solo songs ("When the Sun Comes Out," "Old Man River") and is utterly charming with her old pal and costar in a parody of their MGM films. Affection radiates between the two, as it does with Judy and 17-year-old Liza, taped a month later. Despite the episode's loose concept of Minnelli's mild fright in the face of big-time TV, she actually seems less nervoused-out than her mother; there are moments of protectiveness here that reverse the typical parent-child roles. Powerful, nuanced Garland performances of "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "As Long as He Needs Me" are the highlights here and demonstrate how her personal force could shatter show-biz conventions. The DVD's picture is crisply perfect black and white, while the sound--particularly a new 5.1 surround track--puts across all the vitality of the singers. Intriguing outtakes and promo material fill out the two-hour-plus package, making it a must for Garland aficionados. --Rickey Wright
