I grew up reading Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and many more Super Hero comics as a kid. When this show first aired, it was a difficult pill to swallow. The story was changed and the Hulk effects were somewhat laughable, but they did get a couple of things right! They cast a very likable Bill Bixby in the lead role as David Banner and the shows had heart! Why they changed Banner's first name from Bruce like in the comic book to David?.....well from what I've heard from Stan Lee is they thought Bruce sounded too...eh....G A Y !!!?? A ridiculous assumption, but TV exec's are a strange brood!
The first season set consist of the first 2 pilot films and all 10 episodes from the first season. It would have been nice to have a few behind the scenes features, but it does have some commentary and bonus episodes which to me are a waste of space as Hulk fans are going to buy all the seasons anyway. The episodes look very clean and complete. I rate it 4 1/2 stars for a quality release.

DVD Review: The Beginnings Of Comic Book To Television Greatness History

Back in the late 70's I was just a child already fixated on the power of episodic fantasy television. Even at this early age, shows like Star Trek, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Battlestar Galactica were mandatory viewing. But each of them paled in comparison to probably one of the finest comic book to television adaptations ever, The Incredible Hulk. Overseen by Kenneth Johnson of Six Million/Bionic Woman fame, this weekly show took some of the best aspects from the comic book, and added a few of it's own, to create one of the most well-written and acted shows of it's genre ever. Starring Bill Bixby as the forever-tormented David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast of rage trapped inside him, this series about a doctor who searches for a cure to the gamma radiation he inflicted on himself to tap into his inner strengths, but turns him instead into a six and a half foot green monster whenever he gets angry, was so well done, both kids and their parents gathered around their TV sets to enjoy it week after week. Miles ahead in writing than most Sci-Fi series of it's day, this is one show that truly has stood the test of time.
The Complete First Season pretty much sums up Hulk's first ever single-season release. You get all 12 episodes (two of which are two-hour ones being the Pilot and the first airing), plus a bonus episode from Season Two. While most fans have grown up with the reruns or seen them recently on the Sci-Fi Channel, the picture quality is much better here. Granted, print damage of specs and a few lines still exist, it's color spectrum and black levels are spot-on, making this viewing seem almost made recently. Audio hasn't changed with a decent 2.0 mono though. As for the shows themselves, Hulk started out with a bang, but does suffer a tad from "first season jitters". Basically following "The Fugitive" handbook, Hulk basically
keeps the same pattern, with 2 "Hulk-Outs" per episode. But it's the acting that keeps you in. Not hokey or corny like other 70's shows, but with feeling and drama. Sure, the transformations today look terribly dated, but considering what they had to work with, it should be forgiven. The only other extra is a commentary that was previously released from a single disc version of the pilot, but with all 12 shows you won't feel cheated by a lack of them. A great look into a classic Sci-Fi/Action series humble beginnings.
With all the recent Marvel films that have come out over the past ten years, this television chapter should be revisted by all. Minus the hairstyles and clothing, it truly doesn't look aged that much. And I would take an actual actor sprayed green over fakey cartoonish CGI anyday. A worthy addition to your Fantasy/Sci-Fi DVD collection.

Bursting from comic book pages into this 4-disc DVD set, the Complete First Season of The Incredible Hulk boasts all ten heart-pounding episodes, plus a preview episode from Season Two. Must-see bonus materials include the two original feature-length films, an introduction from The Hulk himself (Ferrigno), and in-depth commentary from producer Kenneth Johnson. Intense. Immense. Incredible!One of the best television adaptations of a comic book, The Incredible Hulk (1978-82) lent gravity and pathos to the fantastic premise--an experiment gone wrong causes a scientist to transform into a giant creature whenever he becomes angry--established in the popular Marvel Comics series. The network version stripped away the Hulk's outlandish foes (as well as his rudimentary speech) and instead focused on the loneliness of his human alter ego, David Banner (well played by the late Bill Bixby), as he traveled across the United States in search of a cure for his affliction as well as an escape from a prying reporter (the late Jack Colvin, also terrific). But despite its Fugitive-like premise, the TV Hulk never lost its comic book audience thanks to the plausibly ferocious performance by actor/bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno (whose growls were dubbed by actors Ted Cassidy and Charles Napier) as the Hulk, who handled the action portions of the show with plausibly superhuman brawn. The Complete First Season set contains both of the pilots that kicked off the series ("Pilot" was previously released on a separate single disc) as well as all 10 episodes from the first season; among the adventures encountered by David and the Hulk are a gambling scandal in Vegas ("The Hulk Breaks Las Vegas"), a meltdown at a nuclear facility ("Earthquakes Happen"), and a runaway plane ("747," which reunites Bixby with his Courtship of Eddie's Father co-star Brandon Cruz).
Extras on the set have been the subject of much Internet debate--the commentary by series writer/producer/director Kenneth Johnson on "Pilot" is the same as on the previous DVD release of this episode (as well as the introduction by Ferrigno), and a proposed gag reel mentioned in promotional material has been moved to a future DVD release. The sole fresh bonus material is "Stop the Presses," an episode taken from the series' second season. --Paul Gaita
