DVD Reviews of The IT Crowd: The Complete Season OneDVD Review: Good. Not great, but good. Summary: 3 Stars
The Characters:
For a show about computers and IT, there's surprisingly little "geek" humor here--oh, sure, Moss is the typical sort of Nerd (glasses, funny voice), but Roy is just a slob and Jen's an idiot. The characters in this first series are really broad, very shouty, and not all that funny. Most of the time. Denholm and Richmond are basically worthless (and not missed when written off in future seasons).
The Funny:
This season is worth watching, though, for the few moments of pure gold: The new "Emergency Services" number and Jen's feet in "Calamity Jen"; Roy's forehead and Moss's dating video in "Fifty-Fifty," and most of "Aunt Irma Visits" is hilarious.
The Weaknesses:
The show's biggest weakness is probably that in this first series is that it's trying to find its voice, and stays too close (especially in the first episode) to traditional sitcoms. The format doesn't help--whenever I see a show with a laugh track now I die a little inside--but they branch out after this first series (Seasons 2 and 3 are far superior) and become more comfortable with their absurdism. The other HUGE difference between later seasons and this one (and even between the last episode of the series and the first) is that the characters are toned WAY down from their shouty, fall-over-and-break-something kind of stupid slapstick into more bizarre and ultimately far more funny territory.
The Lowdown:
It's worth a watch, but if you hate it skip to seasons 2 and 3 instead.
DVD Review: A Great Average Joe to Geek Show!!!!!!! Summary: 5 StarsI happened to catch this show while on Nexflix. Luckily, that was the only way I could check it out. American TV channels need to pick this series up. It'd fit in perfectly with either Adult Swin or G4. Moss is a Hoot. Douglas's additition is genius, best tv character in a long while.
If you enjoy The Big Bang Theory, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, or The Office I suggest giving this TV series a serious look. It gets really funny when season 3 starts.
Season (series) 4 starts filming in March 2010. Woot. Can't wait.
DVD Review: The IT Crowd is Amazing Summary: 5 StarsThe IT Crowd is one of those comedy's that you can keep watching over and over again it is so hilarious. If you like the Office you'll love this show. I first watched this show online before it was released in the US, and after 2 years I finally was able to get it, so overjoyed.
DVD Review: Please buy this for the Computer Nerd in your life Summary: 5 StarsAre you feeling a bit depressed after the holidays? A bit of SAD got you down? Fed up with crowds? Slide season one into your DVD player and get ready to laugh long and hard. I actually work in a building were the server admin folks live in the basement. One of the guys is a bit like Moss. I just can't stop laughing. The in jokes are wickedly funny and be sure you look at all the stickers, posters, t-shirts around the office. Just to give you a little taste of the show: [...]. The title of the clip is "This is the Internet" so if the link doesn't work, just go to You Tube and search by that title. This is a very funny and creatively done show. Why can't America turn out comedy of this quality? Enjoy.
DVD Review: Really not funny Summary: 1 StarsBased on all the reviews here I went ahead and netflixed Season 1 of The IT Crowd and 5 of the 6 episodes were completely unfunny, some even painfully so. One episode was kinda funny, but the rest were simply terrible, the 3 main actors are really bad actors, no comic timing, relying on yelling to try and make things funny, which does not work. I am a British humor kind of guy but this was not good, maybe if you are an IT nerd or something, but for Brit humor I'd stick with The Office or The Mighty Boosh.
Description of The IT Crowd: The Complete Season OneHave you tried turning it on and off again?
In the gleaming high-rise offices of Reynholm Industries, powerful executives oversee billion dollar business deals. But in the dark and shabby basement, the company s IT Support Team bitter slacker Roy (Chris O Dowd), socially inept Moss (Richard Ayoade), and their new boss, computer illiterate Jen (Katherine Parkinson) rule their own domain of professional irresponsibility, mega-nerd ecstasy, and random acts of personal insanity.
Producer Ash Atalla (THE OFFICE) and writer/director Graham Linehan (FATHER TED), present the most critically acclaimed comedy series of the fall television season and a 2008 International Emmy Award winner for Best Comedy, now featuring deleted footage, audio commentaries, a behind-the-scenes documentary and much more.
