DVD Reviews of The History of the WWE Championship

DVD Review: Good If You Don't Have Alot Of The Other WWE DVD's
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the first DVD review I've done for a DVD that honestly, I haven't purchased & don't intent to purchase for the fact that I think WWE dropped the ball for the release because if you have alot of the other DVD's that WWE has released over the past couple of years then there's not enough on here to appeal to you.

They had the chance to pick matches that were more important to the history of the WWWF/WWF/WWE & more rare matches that haven't been released to DVD yet. However (not including the WrestleMania Anthology & PPV only DVD's), 14 of these matches have been released on DVD already (in some cases, 2-4 seperate DVD sets) or already scheduled for DVD sets within the coming months (like Hogan's anthology).

Matches such as the finals of the first WWF Title tournament at WM4 (Savage vs. Dibiase) or even the finals of the second tournament (Rock vs. Mankind); one of the WWF Champion vs. NWA Champion matches from the late 70's-early 80's (ala Backlund or Graham vs. Harley Race), Bret Hart's 1st WWF title win against Ric Flair in Canada, Rock vs. Triple H from either Backlash or Judgment Day 2000's Ironman Match. Austin vs. Undertaker at either SummerSlam '98 or Over The Edge '99 (which was never released due to Owen's death that night)...and how can you forget about the one WWF Title match that changed the business forever; Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels from Survivor Series '97? Even classic title matches from RAW/SmackDown such as the Austin/Taker rematch in July '99 or even the Ironman Match on SmackDown between Kurt Angle & Brock Lesnar.

That would have made this DVD release more worth my money. Anyways, here's the list of matches scheduled to be on this release & I'll review the ones that I have seen and also note which other DVD's you can see most of these matches on.

Disc 1

WWWF Championship Match
Ivan Koloff vs. Pedro Morales
Madison Square Garden - 2/8/71

WWWF Championship Match
Bruno Sammartino vs. Killer Kowalski
Madison Square Garden - 4/29/74

WWWF Championship Match
Bruno Sammartino vs. "Superstar" Billy Graham
Baltimore, Md 4/30/77
(20 Years Too Soon...Superstar Billy Graham Story)

WWWF Championship Match
"Superstar" Billy Graham vs. Bob Backlund
Madison Square Garden - 2/20/78

WWE Championship Match
Bob Backlund vs. Greg Valentine
Philadelphia, PA - 1/16/82

WWE Championship Match
Bob Backlund vs. Sgt. Slaughter
Madison Square Garden - 5/23/83

WWE Championship Match
Iron Sheik vs. Hulk Hogan
Madison Square Garden -1/23/84
(Hulk Still Rules & The Hulk Hogan Anthology)
*The match that started Hulkamania. What else needs to be said that hasn't been said about this already for years.

Steel Cage Match For The WWE Championship
Hulk Hogan vs. King Kong Bundy
Wrestlemania 2 - 4/5/86
(WrestleMania Anthology)
*King Kong Bundy was a monster at this time. Hogan was selling his ribs to a tee as Bundy dominated him until Hogan was able to make his comeback.

Steel Cage Match For The WWE Championship
Hulk Hogan vs. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff
Saturday Night's Main Event - 1/3/87
(Highlights of it on the Steel Cage DVD "Bloodbath")

WWE Championship Match
Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant
Wrestlemania III -3/29/87
(Hulk Still Rules & The Hulk Hogan Anthology)
*The biggest match in the history of professional wrestling as it headlined the 93,000+ indoor attendance record. Just like the Sheik match, there's nothing I can say about this match that hasn't been said for years.

WWE Championship Match
Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant
The Main Event - 2/5/88
*I remember this match from when I was a kid. This was the big rematch almost a year later that ended in controversy when Ted Dibiase payed off Earl Hebner to replace Dave Hebner in the match causing Hogan to be counted down even when his shoulder was up.

WWE Championship Match
Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. Hulk Hogan
Wrestlemania V - 4/2/89
(WrestleMania Anthology & The Hulk Hogan Anthology)
*The Mega Powers Explode. Randy Savage was a real workhorse back then and Hogan knew what to do to get the crowd to react to everything he does. Awesome match with inring storytelling that you rarely see these days.

Disc 2

WWE Championship Match
Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior
Wrestlemania VI - 4/1/90
(Self Destruction Of Ultimate Warrior & The Hulk Hogan Anthology)
*This was at the time the most unique WWF Title match in the companies history. The two most popular wrestlers in the company fought each other in the main event with both the Intercontinental & WWF Title on the line. This was one of the best Ultimate Warrior matches in his lifetime as they just told a great story & this is truely a classic even down the commentary (I don't know if Ventura's voice is still going to be included) where they didn't have a "good guy vs. bad guy" guideline to follow & the fans being split right down the middle.

Steel Cage Match For The WWE Championship
Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart
Summerslam - 8/29/94
(Bloodbath [The Steel Cage DVD])
*Bret Hart said it himself, "We made people forget that a cage match is usually a bloody masscre." This was a classic professional wrestling match to the point to where the cage was only there just to make the moves more high impact.

Iron Man Match For The WWE Championship
Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels
Wrestlemania Xii - 3/31/98
(WrestleMania Anthology & From The Vault: Shawn Michaels)
*I know this match gets alot a praise but honestly, I could only watch the match once since it became predictable after around 20 mins. that they were just going to wrestle the match straight for one hour instead of actually using the "ironman concept" to tell a story of them one upping each other, I just found myself watching the clock & counting it down.

WWE Championship Match
Shawn Michaels vs. Mankind
In Your House: Mind Games - 9/22/96
(From The Vault: Shawn Michaels; Mick Foley: Hard Knocks & Cheap Pops; Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses)
*This was Foley's best match of his career and probably the best match of 1996. HBK's high flyin' lucha libre influenced style mixed with Mankind's hardcore daredevil style made for one hell of a match.

WWE Championship Match
Shawn Michaels vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Wrestlemania XIV - 3/29/98
(WrestleMania Anthology)
*Shawn Michaels was on a high as the leader of D-Generation X but Stone Cold was also becoming the biggest name in WWF. HBK was also working with a bad back injury which you just see in pain throughout the match but it was a great back & forth action match. Mike Tyson on the outside also adds another element to this match. Again, just a great back & forth match.

Disc 3

Street Fight For The WWE Championship
Triple H vs. Cactus Jack
Royal Rumble - 1/23/00
(Triple H: That Damn Good; Triple H: The Game; Mick Foley: Hard Knocks & Cheap Pops; Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses)
*This is the match that catapulted Triple H into the bonified main event superstar that he is today. Thumbtacks, barbed wire, and blood all over the place.

Triple Threat Match For The WWE Championship
The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Kurt Angle
Summerslam - 8/27/00
(Triple H: That Damn Good)
*Triple H has stated this was the most unusual match he's been in. It's more like HHH vs. The Rock featuring Kurt Angle because Kurt gets beat up & carried to the back before the match really starts. On the "Don't Try This At Home" promos before the start of any WWE video, you'll see a part where HHH tries to pedigree someone on a table but it breaks...this is where that clip came from. HHH & Rock go at it but after this, Kurt comes back & gets involved in the last 5 mins. along with Stephanie McMahon. Again, this match was unusual but every entertaining.

WWE Championship Match
The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Wrestlemania X-7 - 4/1/01
(WrestleMania Anthology)
*Just like Hogan vs. Warrior, the two most popular wrestlers in the company fought each other in the main event but they were in Austin's home state which gave him the slight homefield advantage. Austin & Rock never deliever a bad match & this was no exception. High impact, intense, and just great mix of wrestling & brawling...the ending through was a real shocker at the time.

Undisputed WWE Championship Match
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho
Vengeance- 12/9/01
*The match itself was just above average due to Jericho already just going through a match with the Rock while Austin had a match with Angle around 15 mins. earlier. The bigger issue here was just Jericho becoming the first Undisputed Champion in decades.

Triple Threat Match For The Undisputed WWE Championship
The Rock vs. Undertaker vs. Kurt Angle
Vengeance - 7/21/02
(The Rock: Just Bring It Collectors Edition)
*This was one of those triple threat matches that allows everyone to look strong & showcase their dominance at one point or another. When you mix in The Rock, Kurt Angle, and Undertaker...you will never lose there. One of the best triple threats I've seen.

Undisputed WWE Championship Match
The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar
Summerslam - 8/25/02
(Brock Lesnar: Here Comes The Pain)
*The Next Big Thing Had Arrived (then soon left but that's another story...LOL!) The match was absolutely solid from start to finish but the bigger story here was just how through midmatch that the crowd turned on The Rock & were behind Brock Lesnar. This was one of those matches where you knew the result going in but it didn't take away from the great match.

WWE Championship Match
Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit
Royal Rumble - 1/19/03
(Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story)
*This was a professional wrestling (not sports entertainment) fans dream match. Honestly, this is one of those matches that words would not do it justice. Wanna know how good this was...people were giving both Angle & Benoit standing ovations after the match.

Triple Threat Match For The WWE Championship
John Cena vs. Chris Jericho vs. Christian
Vengeance - 6/26/05
*Awesome triple threat match with, of course, Tomko tryin' to get his shots in as well. We all know whenever you involve Jericho & Christian in the same match...you'll get something worth watching.

Again, the matches on here weren't bad but again...it's ones that we've seen time after time after time on other various WWE DVD's. They had the chance to pick matches that were more important to the history of the belt & more rare matches that haven't been released to DVD yet. Bottom line, if you don't have alot of these other DVD titles with these matches on it then get it but if your a WWE DVD fan like myself, save your money & pass because it wouldn't be worth it past disc one.
