DVD Review: Great DVD for experienced Belly dancer

I got this dvd on the suggestion of my troupe leader and I have been dancing for 11 months. I attended a workshop and took a drum solo class and found that was the most fun for me. So I wanted to choreograph my own drum solo. This dvd helped describe the basics of drum solos such as music and teaches choreography. The choreography is broken down pretty well but I still found some things to be very challenging. It did help me in choreographing my own drum solo that I will be performing in a couple weeks! I would definitely recommend this dvd to anyone interested in learning more about drum solos. DVD Review: Really Useful DVD

My first introduction to rythmns was a workshop with Souhail kaspar, then I got Sonia's dvd with Issam, then I bought this dvd and finally understood the information trying to be transmitted to me. While I prefer Sonia's choreography over Jenna's I must say this dvd is by far better in many aspects.
For one Raquy breaks down the rythmns in a much more understandable fashion, I did not understand the break down of the rythmns with Issam. She says them, claps them out, then plays them on the drum. And although this may have been a bit elementary IT WORKS.
The choreography section consist of three different drum solo routines.One for each level of skill Jenna performs it first then breaks it down,does a demonstration then let you learn and practice. Jenna's performances are always fun and jumpy as with her choreographies.I love the fact that the music she uses for the choreography is given before you even begin the choreography.The choreography themselves are short about 2mintues long.She just wants to give you some exposure to using the drum beats with actual techniques.
The reason I even rated this dvd this high was strictly because of the rythmn workshop. The rhythmns were taught in a fashion that can be understood and put to use when you hear them. 8 commonly used rythmns were taught as well as the meanings behind them and what type of movements go best with them.
I have to say the shimmy drills were excellent all by themselves, there was a shimmy layering drill and a 3/4 drill.The only thing that could have been better was adding more shimmies like the freeze which is also commonly used in drum solos. But with the instruction given that was not a neccessity.
I do not like Jenna's breakdown of moves which she demonstrates in the about shimmy section but I can appreciate that everyone has different learning styles and they may be more compatible with her teaching methods.
While again I am not a fan of the choreographies the instruction on the rythmns alone are enough to make me get this dvd a must have for belldancers. Not only does learning the rythmns help you dance better with drum solos but a lot of the rythmns are used in ordinary bellydance music, it is helping your dance all around. Also if you are learning the zills a well grounded understanding of the rythmns is CRUCIAL.

While some reviewers have accurately noted that the actual video editing and production quality here is less than ideal...the actual content and information within make up for this ten fold!
The menus and play features are a bit annoying as they require you to select and start in order to play each section. It would be better if the dvd simply played all the way through, without the stopping between each section.
Jenna offers a warm up, figures and technique instruction, three really tight choreographies at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels and just when you think it can't get any better, she throws in a wonderful and so well done section on drum rhythm identification, explanation, and examples.
This is one of the BEST productions regarding actual content and information I have ever seen! This DVD is generously filled with material to help you dance your best!

A bellydance drum solo is actually a duet: Together, a dancer and a drummer create a unique piece of performance art. For the dancer, the drum solo is an exciting experience demanding a profound understanding of rhythmic patterns and a wide vocabulary of bellydance moves and accents, all necessary to enable her to interact at will with the music created by the drummer.RHYTHM WORKSHOP: Raquy (New York) breaks apart eight popular bellydance rhythms: baladi, saiidi, maksoum, masmoudi, ciftetelli, malfouf, ayub, & semai. Acclaimed as a percussion performer, instructor and composer, Raquy teaches us how to recognize each rhythm. Then Jenna (Los Angeles) a star dancer, instructor and choreographer, demonstrates effective dance combinations for each of the eight rhythms. Accompanied by Raquy and Carmine, Jenna then also demonstrates the unique art of drum solo improvisation including the above rhythms.
CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: Jenna takes you step-by-step through three bellydance drum solo choreographies; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each instructional session takes place before the mirror, enabling you to follow Jenna as if you were right behind her in the studio.
