DVD Review: Jerry Garcia and His "Wall Of Sound"
Summary: 5 Stars
This film ranks right up there with the other concert films from the era ("Woodstock", "The Last Waltz", Oliver Stone's "The Doors" come to mind ) and might be the best, though "The Last Waltz" is also very good. Certainly for a time they were vying for the #1 group position. Like one of his chief competitors, The Band & Dylan, Garcia had an affinity for American traditional music including bluegrass to complement his more popular songwriting skills. This differentiated them from such previous songwriters as Brian Wilson. All of this took place within the context of an explosion in rock music (since then documented by "Rolling Stone" magazine, which considers the 60's and 70's to be the most creative period in rock music) and of the counterculture of the 1960's--an atmosphere of widespread domestic and international youthful opposition to the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, and the feminist movement. Much later, in "The Fog Of War" former Kennedy Defense Secretary Robert S.MacNamara admitted that the Vietnam War was wrong. Garcia and the Dead actually became pretty aggressive in my opinion with their last two studio albums ("Built To Last" and "In The Dark") a quality I would never have associated with them in their earlier years--years that I associate with such gentle songs as "Uncle John's Band" or "St. Stephen" "Friend Of The Devil" or "Ripple". By this time they were largely being overshadowed by The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and others.
The film also might be an important historical document in the same way that"Fahrenheit 9/11" might turn out to be: the early days in Golden Gate Park, the construction of the huge Wall of Sound,tuning the instruments, Bill Graham, the Hell's Angels, the use of psychedelic art, the kudos from the audience to the "shy" stage crew,the Mars Hotel (apparently a San Francisco landmark special to the Dead),the numerous interviews with artists,promoters, concertgoers, ticket holders, street people, and hangers-on--mostly positive,since most are Deadheads, one negative, who considers the film a rip-off; the children, food vendors (one of whom doesn't like the Dead because they are too loud), and security personnel,the dancing men and women and rapt faces of the audience, and of course mainly the music. And perhaps most notably of all--the R.Crumb-inspired animation of Uncle Sam on his Harley which dominates the early part of the film and accompanies the group's laid back song "U.S. Blues".
