DVD Reviews of The Future We Will Create: Inside the World of TEDDVD Review: Took my return Summary: 4 StarsI thought I was purchasing a book but this was a DVD. The seller agreed to let me return the item.
DVD Review: My favorite vid Summary: 5 StarsA friend gave me this video as a gift as she knows how much I love innovative ideas and the people who create them. TED delivers! I am an "average" person with a regular job who will probably never attend a TED Conference in person. That didn't matter one iota. Why wait for politicians to get their act together to produce meaningful ideas and solutions to todays problems? These are real people coming together to share the world's most innovative ideas. I'm particularly inspired by the presenters with a humanitarian spin. That's what makes me want to think up my own innovative ideas that will somehow help others.
Have you seen Jill Bolte's Taylor's "Stroke of Insight" on the web? Here's where it was originally was presented. Unlike the 2 star reviewer's comments...I don't think we have enough inspiring people like the TED presenters in the world. We need private innovation and products to solve our own issues. That review says more about the reviewer than what's presented here. Need a dose of hope? Start here, then go to the TED website for free videos about a multitude of subjects that will no doubt impress you with new ideas about solving problems: education, eradicating disease, developing sustainability, permaculture, feeding and housing the poor, you name it. These "smart people" are surprisingly down to earth, funny, and accessible. This is my favorite video to play for guests when they visit. It inspires everyone to talk, share ideas, and feel good. I've "converted" many to watch the TED website, and share with their families and friends. Ted is addictive, but a very healthy addiction...
DVD Review: A modest, but inspiring documentary Summary: 5 StarsThis film provides in interesting perspective on TED. First, it's about TED 2006, which means that the ideas presented have had time to come to fruition: a man introduces multi-touch, which has become the iPhone. Next, the film is about the whole TED experience, not just the 20 minute speeches: you can see how the speeches lead to collaboration. For instance, you see how Majora Carter goes from outsider to the board of directors of Al Gore's organization. You see Larry Brilliant go from a man with a powerful idea, to the man who runs google.org. You see how Bono combined with tech gurus to create a grass roots organization that advocates for Africa. It's not just ideas, it's about the power of people coming together to combine their passions and skills.
How much time have you spent finding problems that you care about deeply? How much time have you spent trying to find a way to solve those problems? TED is inspiring because the solutions are effective and clever, but not genius. If you haven't tried to solve big problems it's only because you didn't think to try. We are all clever enough. We all have something to contribute.
DVD Review: the website has more content, but the DVD gives a better history Summary: 4 Starsthe website has more content, but the DVD gives a better history. I love the concept, I like the narrative, but I was hoping for more of the presentations that were given at TED. I guess it all you could ask for in a two disk set. The web site is a great place to go for inspiration and guidance. http://www.ted.com/index.php
DVD Review: No Thinking Required Summary: 2 StarsWe will encounter some of the brightest minds and freshest thinking and reduce them to 30 second sound bites and fill the bulk of the movie with meaningless, self promoting drivel from the current TED director and the adventures of the host as she gets coffee and goes to the beach.
Save your money and watch the presentations for free from the TED website.
