Blu-ray Review: Great Movie, BD only OK
Summary: 3 Stars

John Carpenter's 1980 film 'The Fog' is a campfire ghost story put to film. It is one of the classics of the ghost story genre and is well-liked by Carpenter's fans. The film itself has a very nice soundtrack produced by Mr. Carpenter himself, and the story is as I've stated before, very interesting. The effects are somewhat dated in terms of matting and such, but the pirates themselves, seen on the cover of this Blu Ray are still as creepy as they were in '80.

Now, what you may be asking yourself, why did I give 'The Fog' only 3 stars if I like the movie? Well, the 3 stars are not for the movie, and this review is not just for the movie. This review is about the Blu Ray transfer.

The transfer in itself is OK. The darks are dark, the colors vibrant, the detail is adequate. But the colors seem a bit overbearing at times, and the definition seems to vary throughout the movie, making you wonder if you are truly watching in 1080p. The film does not have a horrible transfer by an means, but it is not fantastic. Hopefully a new Blu Ray will be issued in the coming months. The audio is just about the same as the transfer, adequate. Nothing fantastic but better than the DVD.

However, the DVD has something to offer that this Blu Ray does not: Special Features. This BD has absolutely no features. If you like your special features and could wait on a better transfer, either stick with your DVD copy or go out and get one. It is relatively cheap and gives you a good commentary by the director and producer.
