DVD Review: A fine coda to a great career

If James Joyce's "The Dead" is a near-perfect short story, this adaptation directed by John Huston is a near-perfect film. Like the best of Huston's later work, "The Dead" shows a master quietly confident in his abilities, able to view his characters with both truth and compassion. Despite the grim title, the story is set at a bustling Christmastime dinner party at the home of two maiden aunts in Dublin. In a sense, this story belongs to the genre of Christmas ghost stories, as thoughts of the dead, and the effect they have on the living, weave in and out of the characters' present-day lives. The tone is like much of Irish literature: at times wry, sentimental, regretful, tragic, and mystical.
