DVD Review: IS ANYONE ELSE HOT AND COLD? Summary: 4 StarsThe Day After Tomorrow is a disaster film that succeeded in getting across it's message about global warming while still keeping it's audience thoroughly entertained. The plot follows a Climatologist named Jack and his son,who are unfortunately States apart when Mother Nature finally decides she's smelled enough burning fuel. It's up to Jack to convince higher authorities that the worst isn't over and to reach his son before it's too late. The acting is quite good for a summer blockbuster and the special effects are top-notch,such as a massive tsunami swallowing New York or a dozen Tornadoes tearing apart L.A. Afterall, these are the same people who made Independence Day so should we expect anything less? The film was well cast and the musical score fits the movie quite well. While it's not a perfect film,The Day After Tomorrow sets itself apart from other disaster movies by confronting you with an unfortunate truth about the future while still entertaining the crap out of you.
DVD Review: Great special effects, good acting, so-so plot Summary: 4 StarsOkay, I admit it. I'm a sucker for disaster movies. I like "Independence Day". A lot. I cried at "I Am Legend". I have watched "Titanic" more times than is good for me. I like soap operas (at least the way they were back in the 80's).
That said, I really didn't expect a whole lot from this movie. I wasn't a particularly big fan of Dennis Quaid's before watching this movie. However, his performance in this changed my mind. To be honest, he was AWESOME. Actually, I felt that all of the performances were well-done. The acting was not over-the-top like those old 70's disaster movies.
This movie took a very obvious shot at the Bush/Cheney administration's environmental policies. As a Democrat, I found it a little amusing and very true-to-life. However, in spite of those policies, I doubt that what occured in the movie could occur, especially in the timeframe presented. But this isn't a scientific movie, it's a movie meant to entertain and meant to make people think just a little bit about the environment.
As for the special effects, I thought they were outstanding. I am not an expert at computer graphics or anything, I hasten to add, but they were wayyyyyy better than "Independence Day" (just as an example). The scenes of a frozen New York were worth watching alone, IMO.
The scene at the end, with Sam and Jack at smiling each other, was a little ridiculous. If what occured in this movie had really happened, we would be facing utter devastation. The entire New York (and world) financial system would be kaput. Most people wouldn't have a retirement plan or money anymore. Everything would be destroyed. It would be chaos. The fact that they were sitting there like "Gee, I'm glad that's over, everything will be peachy now" was absurd. But again, it is just a movie...:)
DVD Review: Impact Remains Summary: 5 StarsI have watched this movie several times on TV and it never fails to enthrall and frighten me with the awesome possibilities of Nature's forces.I would take the message of our careless abuse of natural resources to heart and since we create the problem of pollution we can find a solution( or several ) to improve the quality of the air we breath and share with all living creatures.Nature can't be controlled completely but we can learn to cooperate as a global community. And just like peace it begins with each of us.
The prospects of another ice-age followed by or preceeding global flooding
is very possible as we all are familiar with the story of Noah's flood and many ancient cultures mention the flood which gave birth to new life.
The message in this movie should not be taken lightly we do need to take better care of our environment.
As we approach Earth's completed cycle of its 11,000 year journey(the Mayan calendar was interpreted as approximately 25,000 years) and it reaches the position in the center of our galaxy (culminating around the first day of Winter 2012) our planet will wobble and more than likely more volcanoes will erupt and climate change will occur that includes the global flooding mentioned in Noah's day(Old Testament of the Bible) just as it's doing now.The Earth is billions of years old but extinction of any species is always possible.Humans survived the last ice-age and global flooding we can survive again as long as we know what is happening---just don't panic.
I found this movie to be an edge of the seat thriller packed with alot of unsettling more than possible real life special effects.Frozen air can destroy machinery and life forms can be flash frozen. The delicate balance of ocean currents can affect air flow masses and there is always the possibilities of superhurricanes, catogory 5 plus tornadoes combining together and tidal waves created by storm surges. These are happening at this time. And I will mention the fact the poles keep our atmosphere cooler and if they do melt all at once as Earth heats up ,the water rises and then begins to create steam and a jungle (greenhouse) effect. The temperatures and humidity would reach unbearable proportions for most life forms.
As far as the dialogue is concerened it is appropriate for the movie, kept it going and being concerned about family members, community and the need for survival is very human.I don't believe I have ever watched a scarier movie than this one whose only monster is the uncontrollable violent forces of Nature fighting to survive and the good Earth----our only home in this universe) conquors all.
I give the movie 5 stars for excellence in getting a difficult message across as a warning about the effects of global changes. What took earth billions of years to create and evolve in many life forms as flora and fauna humankind has managed to affect with our pollution of perhaps a century that can very likely bring about our demise.Take it seriously..it's happened in the Earth's past.
DVD Review: Review: The day after tomorrow... Summary: 4 StarsAction, adventure, quick thinking are all inclusive of this film starring Dennis Quaid, Because of the constant Burning of fossil fuels can only lead to one conclusion - weather gone ravenous. The Day After Tomorrow (Widescreen Edition)
Description of The Day After Tomorrow (Widescreen Edition)When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm and stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered: Mother Nature! Supreme silliness doesn't stop The Day After Tomorrow from being lots of fun for connoisseurs of epic-scale disaster flicks. After the blockbuster profits of Independence Day and Godzilla, you can't blame director Roland Emmerich for using global warming as a politically correct excuse for destroying most of the northern hemisphere. Like most of Emmerich's films, this one emphasizes special effects over such lesser priorities as well-drawn characters and plausible plotting, and his dialogue (cowritten by Jeffrey Nachmanoff) is so laughably trite that it could be entirely eliminated without harming the movie. It's the spectacle that's important here, not the lame, recycled plot about father and son (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal) who endure an end-of-the-world scenario caused by the effects of global warming. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome visions of tornado-ravaged Los Angeles, blizzards in New Delhi, Japan pummeled by grapefruit-sized hailstones, and Manhattan flooded by swelling oceans and then frozen by the onset of a modern ice age. It's all wildly impressive, and Emmerich obviously doesn't care if the science is flimsy, so why should you? --Jeff Shannon
