DVD Reviews of The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series)

DVD Review: Refreshingly Dark
Summary: 5 Stars

Hollywood often bores me. But The Crow was a brilliant combination of Death Wish, Ghost and the Dark Knight. It has a rather standard, staid theme of revenge, but adds to it such odd imagery - a ghoul hero with a Death symbol for a pet and poetry from Edgar Allen Poe. This all gives the film a rich depth and body, like a robust wine, which surprisingly for all the dark imagery, goes down rather smoothly. The reason the deeply shadowed film feels so good is because of its counterpoint meta message - the power of love. This note is admittedly a chic-flick theme, but with all the explosions and fight scenes and a walking corpse, this is hardly Sleepless in Seattle.
Brandon Lee gives a powerful performance and it is truly unfortunate we won't see more of him, because his very natural style on this screen hints to more amazing skill that could have been his future. It's also exciting that he was willing to take on such an "alternative" film.
The music score was marvelous, but admittedly, I also love Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, early Queensryche and other metal rockers. So if you don't like metal, the music might not connect. The music connected clearly with the dark image of random gangs of rouges that rape, pillage and plunder for pure entertainment - a hint of A Clockwork Orange in that regard.
The film has a bit of the Hollywood standard T&A, but no gratuitous sex scenes. It has explosions purely for the sake of excitement, but the other elements of image and shadow, philosophical themes of humanity and eternal love, powerful music and hard-hitting, well timed poetry. As a result, the standard tools of sex, violence and "rock and roll" can be forgiven. The Crow is truly a work of art, not just a flick. Nicely done.

DVD Review: The only adaption of The Crow worthy of purchase.
Summary: 5 Stars

Brandon Lee gives out his best performance in this film. This is the only adaption of The Crow that's worth buying and the special features on the DVD is a plus. The Crow is also Brandon Lee's last film. This is worthy of collecting just as much as Heath Ledger's final full performance in The Dark Knight as The Joker. I'm naming my son after Brandon Lee.

DVD Review: A favorite!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is one of my all time favorites!! The movie arrived in great condition and I was satisfied with the length of time it took to get to me!!!

DVD Review: Very abstract!
Summary: 5 Stars

Just watched it for the first time today (Collector's Series) and it was great! First off, yes I am a Bruce Lee fan but I knew this film would not be like one of his. Brandon was perfect for this role especially after watching the interview with the creator of the book/comic that it's based on. The film has a dark, muggy, and redemption feel to it through out the movie. The fighting scenes were great because they weren't over the top but yet enough to keep the mood right and show another side to Brandon's acting. The movie moved at a great pace, not too fast and not too long. You just have to watch it to experience what Brandon was capable of. R.I.P. Bruce and Brandon.

Description of The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series)

Catch the explosive, action-packed hit that thrilled moviegoers and dazzled critics everywhere! Brandon Lee (RAPID FIRE) plays Eric Draven, a young rock guitarist who, along with his fiancee, is brutally killed by a ruthless gang of criminals. Exactly one year after his death, Eric returns -- watched over by a hypnotic crow -- to seek revenge, battling the evil crime lord and his band of urban thugs, who must answer for their crimes. Loaded with intense, nonstop action and a hot #1 hit soundtrack, THE CROW delivers exhilarating, fast-paced entertainment!
The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. Guided by a portentous crow (standing in for Poe's raven), Lee plays a deceased rock musician who returns from the grave to systematically torture and kill the outlandishly violent gang of hoodlums who murdered him and his fianc?e the year before. The film is worth watching for its compelling visuals and genuinely nightmarish, otherworldly ambience. --Jim Emerson
