DVD Reviews of The Cramps - Live at Napa State Mental Hospital

DVD Review: I'll Cut Your Head Off & Put it in my TV SET!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

"Anybody Know what's on TV ?? ...YOU ARE!" Just like Joe Rees from Target Video says on the back of this fantastic, but grainy, black and white video release, "It becomes hard to tell who are really the mental patients." This is Lux Interior and The Cramps in their prime, Live at Napa State Mental Hospital in June of 1978. Though, I highly enjoyed watching this crazy show, I do wish there was more than just 8 songs - with the band opening up with "Mystery Plane" from their first studio album Songs the Lord Taught Us. The rest of the seven songs are: "Way I Walk" - "What's Behind the Mask" - "Human Fly" - "Domino" - "Love Me" (telling the crowd to "Please Love Me!") - "Twist and Shout" & "TV Set" to finish things off ~
All throughout the show you have the mental patients joining in and singing along with the band, bobbing back and forth, wild-eyed and smiling from ear to ear ~ Just like Lux himself! Truly a Mad-Man and proud of it, Mr. You got this lady ballroom dancing with Lux, looking like crazed skeletons, mic is getting all tangled up from peoples' pushing and shoving, all awhile a crowd of crazies are screaming and shouting. During the song "Love Me," Lux asks to a chick sitting next to him, "How do you like the Cramps, honey?" Ooh I got cramps, Lux: "Yeah, I got Cramps too, and I don't know what to do with them either."
- "What a mess!" but really I can't envision a Cramps show any better than this, despite how short it is! "I'll Use Your Eyeballs as Dials for my TV SET!" - 22 minutes of CHAOS! Just the way that I like it ~ Yes, craziness abounds...for fans of The Cramps and/OR Mental Institutions :P

DVD Review: the cramps live at napa state mental hospital dvd
Summary: 4 Stars

Although not one of their best performances, fans will love it. The patients fully participate in the performance, and the cramps are totally comfortable with and enjoying the patients. Lux allows patients to use the mic between verses, and although very uninhibited, it does not appear that any of them have heard the cramps before. It's hysterically funny.

DVD Review: Bad taste was never so much fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first heard about The Cramps back in the very early 1990's when I saw Lux and Poison Ivy appear on "Night After Night with Alan Havey" on Comedy Central (that was a GREAT show, by the way!). Lux was wearing a skin-tight, red vynal suit with red high heels and Alan asked him, "Do you go to business meetings dressed like this?" and Lux replied, "Well, I do find that it tends to cut through a lot of red tape." From that moment on, I was a Cramps fan, without even hearing a note of their music. Once I did hear their music, I loved them even more.

For many years, I wished I had some kind of a video of them because I knew that hearing their music and seeing them play was two completely differnt things. Then, a few years ago, I found this DVD and knew I had to have it. It lived up to my expectations and way more! It's just as campy and trashy as you would expect. As others have said, it makes you wonder what the people in charge of Napa State Mental Hospital were thinking to get them to play there. Obviously, they had no idea what The Cramps were all about. Sure the sound and video quality are bad, but to me, that adds to the experience of watching it. Isn't trashy punk rock suppose to be low quality? In all honesty, the sound quality of it is actually pretty good given the technology that was used to record it 30 years ago.

But you have to ask yourself if the 20 minute or so performace is worth the money for this DVD. Maybe it's not, but where else are you going to get such a gem of rock and roll and punk rock history? Is it all done in bad taste? HELL YES.....but that's what makes it so much fun! Anyone who loves The Cramps wouldn't have it any other way!

DVD Review: Great rock and roll moments...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a classic, although I've only seen the VHS version (doesn't sound like much has changed on the DVD..) - there are more than a couple of moments that are absolutely fantastic, especially during the instrumental break in "Love Me", when one of the male patients gets on stage, grabs the mic, and lets go several wordless screams at the top of his lungs as the band pounds and thrashes behind him. For me, this is what rock and roll is (or should be) all about.
Another one: between songs, Lux interviews the audience:
LUX (to a kind-of-attractive, blond female patient): "What do you think of The Cramps so far, baby?" PATIENT: (yells) "I GOT THE CRAMPS, WHAT AM I GONNA DO ABOUT 'EM?!?" LUX: "I don't know, baby, I got 'em myself, I can't do a thing with 'em."

DVD Review: Fantastic.

The Cramps: Live at Napa State Mental Hospital (Anonymous, 1978)

Perhaps more important in the annals of film because it was (according to the text at the end) one of the first films shot with a handheld commercial-quality video camera, The Cramps Live at Napa State Mental Hospital serves an entirely different purpose in the annals of punk rock: this is DIY mayhem at its finest, the punk equivalent of Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison, except that the inmates are allowed audience participation. This little twenty-minute (note that Amazon, Blockbuster, and IMDB all incorrectly list it as sixty minutes) masterpiece should be required viewing for any musicians who style themselves "punk" these days, to see how horribly short they fall. The band are at the height of their live powers. Lux Interior manages to be slinky and hyper at the same time, kind of like a thin Harvey Keitel who's in the process of overdosing on crank, while the rest of the band just look on in amused fascination. Interior also knows how to win a crowd, no matter who that crowd may be. "Someone said you people are crazy. I ain't so sure..." Oh, yes. The music, of course, is vintage Cramps, a combination of three-chord punk and twelve-bar rockabilly with charmingly spacy lyrics. For the love of god, if you've never seen this, and you are, were, or will be a fan of anything remotely resembling punk, you must see this. Thankfully, Target have engineered a new release of the disc recently, so you can. **** ?
