DVD Reviews of The Count of Monte Cristo 1975 (Der Graf von Monte Christo) [Import - All Regions]

DVD Review: The Best English-language Adaptation of the Classic Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) is one of the best-selling and best-loved books of the world. Alexandre Dumas, pere wrote the novel en francais, and I can't think of another non-English book that has been turned into ten film versions (half of them in English), unless it is Dumas' equally famous The Three Musketeers.

The book is thrilling and lavish, with themes of hope and despair, vengeance and mercy, nobility and justice and revenge. It is also about 1,000 pages long. Trying to condense the varied and equally delicious plot lines into one feature length film is all but futile, but this version comes closest to satisfyingly staying true to the spirit of the famous tale of Edmund Dantes. (The '99 French version with Gerard Depardieu is a mini-series lasting seven hours.)

Richard Chamberlain makes the most dashing Count in memory. (James Caviezel seems the merest school-boy in comparison.) Donald Pleasance is properly slimy and greedy as Danglars. Louis Jourdan makes a pompous (and French!) De Villefort. Kate Nelligan is luminous and desirable as Mercedes. Tony Curtis' Bronx accent is a little distracting as Fernand Mondego, but not enough to not recommend this version.

It would be worth seeing if only to watch Richard Chamberlain walk through Danglars' double-doors, removing his cape with a flourish.

Also of note compared to the 2002 Caviezel version - this one, although truncating some book through necessity, at least sticks to the book for the parts that ARE presented. The ending is true to the book and is supposed to be bittersweet. Why does Hollywood insist on a Hollywood ending?
