DVD Reviews of The Brave One (Widescreen Edition)

DVD Review: Horrendously Bad
Summary: 1 Stars

One of those films where you tend to look at your watch 10 minutes into this and wonder if your sock drawer needs arranging, the cat was fed and if Jody Foster's career will ever bounce back from a lame movie with a terrible script. While there are differences between this "revenge" movie and others (Jody is a radio personality, who's boyfriend is brutally murdered), there is no everyperson quality about her as there are in other films (read: an architect who's wife is killed and daughter driven to psychosis). The whole movie seems to be both forced and contrived as if taken from another movie (where Paul Kersey is an avenging citizen). Jody just doesn't seem to have the "Death Wish" that another film so powerfully had in the 1970's. If you haven't got the hint yet, buy or rent "Death Wish". It's a much better film.

DVD Review: Brave One Wins!
Summary: 5 Stars

Jodie Foster thriller with her superb control of the screen! If you like to see the bad guy fall and the little guy win, then this is for you. Surprise ending. Graphic, but not too graphic.

DVD Review: Neil Jordan and Jodie Foster go down a dark alley
Summary: 4 Stars

Many people have compared this female vigilante film to earlier films like "Ms45" and "Death Wish" yet the fact that the sensitive Irish director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) and Jodie Foster are involved plus the excellent Terrence Howard should make this a cut above those films. In many ways it is since instead of exploiting the violence that the main character creates--we get a sense that the closure will never come to that individual. There is no catharisis, and Foster's character realizes what she is doing is wrong but she can't stop it? This element plus the superb interaction between Foster and Howard make this an above average action flick much much better than that terrible film which came out weeks before this one did ("Death Sentence" with Kevin Bacon). What you make of the ending will depend on your perception of it but I believe it was disturbing and yet in a way, it was the best one available. Recommended if you especially enjoy Ms Foster's work. The HD DVD version which I bought for under $6 is superb and a value at that!!

DVD Review: Meet the real world.
Summary: 4 Stars

To say I "Liked" this movie (as in entertaining) is not quite an accurate description. It was however very worth seeing. It's a story of a well intentioned sheep(le) meeting a real world wolf pack, getting chewed up and the aftermath following. It's an honest movie, with honest reactions. It's about being forced to see the harsh reality of a world outside most peoples experience. This is not a movie for people who wish to remain in la la land. You will be changed by it. How you are changed will be determined by how honest you are and your grasp of the real world. It's a red pill vs blue pill sort of thing.

I gave it four stars simply because hollywierd seems to require the obligatory sex scenes which have little to do with the movies story line. I will give a little leniency here as far as the story goes in as much as it contrast a physical sense of what life offered and what was delivered. If I could delete them for scenes of contrasting love and affection on my own copy I would.

This movie reminded me a lot of "Falling Down" where society seems to cares little for the individual per se but only for the herd in general. It addresses this issue obliquely if you look for it. You really should see it.

DVD Review: 1st Rule of a Gunfight: Have A Gun!
Summary: 4 Stars

Let's see. Obey NY City tough gun laws and be dead, or buy a hot one on the street and live. Hmmmm.... Well, if Washington DC anti-gun policies continue, we will all be dead. Bravo to Foster's character who skirts the law to survive. Gun sales continue to rise as freedom loving Americans want to survive, not let Obama policies kill them. Good flick.

Description of The Brave One (Widescreen Edition)

"Why don't they stop me?" Erica Bain wonders. Bain, a popular N.Y radio host, watched her fianc? die and nearly lost her own life to a vicious, random attack. Now she discovers a stranger within herself, an armed wanderer in the urban night, out for vengeance and at war with her own soul. Two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster, as Erica, joins Oscar nominee Terrence Howard, as a determined cop hot on her trail. Erica?s future is uncertain, but one thing is not: THE BRAVE ONE is a high- tension thriller that packs a visceral and emotional punch.
Neil Jordan's somber The Brave One is a lot of things. A reflective movie about a crime victim's sense of dislocation and isolation from her own life following a harrowing trauma, the film will strike a chord with a lot of people who have known violence. The Brave One is also a provocative drama about the nature of justice, a theme explored endlessly in American movies that typically find law enforcement wanting. In Jordan's film, however, the conflict between instinctive vigilantism and legal protocols is approached with more deliberateness and complexity than usual. Finally, despite its seriousness of purpose, The Brave One, to a certain extent, is drearily tethered to the old atrocity-and-revenge genre, bumping along to the familiar, Death Wish-like rhythms of an avenger seeking successive conflicts with bad guys he or she can blow away.

Somewhat at cross-purposes, The Brave One stars Jodie Foster in a shattering performance as Erica Bain, a popular essayist on a public radio station in New York. In love and engaged to David (Naveen Andrews), a doctor, Erica and her fianc? are brutally attacked one night by a gang of thugs. David is killed but Erica survives, only to find herself a stranger in her own skin, facing down her fears by shooting violent criminals.

With the city riveted by her anonymous actions, Erica becomes an object of curiosity for a police detective (an excellent Terrence Howard) disillusioned by his own struggles to protect the innocent from truly evil men. Jordan's previous films (The Crying Game, Breakfast on Pluto) resonate with The Brave One's most interesting angle, i.e., that each of us possesses a hidden element in our identities that comes out in extreme circumstances, making us wonder who we really are. It's all excellent food for thought, but the film squanders much of its significance by thrusting Erica into numerous, outlandish situations in which her only alternative is to put a bullet in a bad guy. The result is a smart film tediously structured like a disposable B movie. --Tom Keogh
