DVD Review: Sickly stuff that is a guilty pleasure.
Summary: 4 Stars
Saccharin, schmaltzy, melodramatic, clumsy and unrealistic, The Boys of Sunset Ridge is a chocolate box movie conceived, designed, produced and marketed to tug at the heart strings in a way only Middle American movies can. And you know what? I like it.
Here is a movie not trying to be anything more than advertised: emotional candy. Its flaws, of which there are many, seem like too cute kittens that only the churlish could chastise. The melodrama is as clunky as the light relief is fluffy: The ridiculous groundskeeper, the buxom girlfriend, the genial racism, the family troubles; sledgehammers have more subtlety. But despite this and its proselytising nature the film still manages to do exactly what its chocolate box setting promises.
Four boys sneak into a private golf club for a cheeky round and are caught and lectured by a member. It proves a pivotal point in their lives as all four begin to examine what they want from life. They make a pact to come back every year and play a round and through the conversations as they play we see how each characters world view affects his life and the friendship between all four: the dreamer, the womaniser, the priest and the career man.
It's definitely not heavyweight material but by the end we have a very real sense of lives lived and friendships shared that does indeed warm the heart. As I said, the flaws are many: in performance, story and character; but just as any big blockbuster requires a certain amount of suspension of belief and of a life lived in reality so does anything 'heartfelt' that comes out of Hollywood.
For fans, I would say, of Madison County, The Breakfast Club, Coupe De Ville, Field of Dreams, Stand By Me, and the two Alans: Arkin and Alda.
I'm torn between four stars and three but will err on the generous side for the warm fuzziness ...Sunset Ridge provides.
