DVD Reviews of The Book Of Mormon Volume I The JourneyDVD Review: A great depiction of the Book of Mormon Summary: 4 Stars

'To members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Book of Mormon is a sacred record of an ancient people who migrated from Jerusalem to the America's some 600 years before the birth of Christ. The book covers approximately one thousand years of their history, including a visit by Jesus Christ, after his crucifixion and resurrection in the old world.'
I would rather watch a movie than read it, for the most part just because what this movie covered in 2 hours would take me a week to read. The acting, well, it wasn't terrible- Laman and Lemuel were both pretty accurate in my mind. I am a church member, active, etc and this was a close depiction to what the scriptures actually say, of course there was some more added to the story for the sake of making it a little more understandable to us and more fun to watch; for instance Nephi almost getting beat up and killed in the beginning for his father Lehi's preaching. Everything else was pretty accurate and maybe slightly more modern than the scriptures are, but I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it. Angel Moroni made me laugh- as that was not at all how I pictured him and it was really cheesy. And Nephi was a real suck up to Lehi. I found myself reacting most like Laman and Lemuel- who are supposed to be the bad guys-it made me want to be a better person in the end, because Nephi was so much more faithful and unshakable.
They depict over and over again how Laman and Lemuel see angels and feel the power of God, and then they fall away so quickly after that- most of us are like that. I never imagined really, how hard it must have been for the sons of Lehi to live in a city that mocked their father, and to have to return to get the Brass plates from Laban- it was a ton more difficult than I imagined from reading the scriptures- which made my prospective change.
I would say Nephi isnt as physically strong as I imagined him either- he looks strong but he couldnt even defend himself against 2 puny guys in the beggining. I was hoping for a little more- maybe not like the matrix, but he is a big guy...
I would not recommend this for people who are interested in the church- just because this takes a different approach than actually reading the book. Once you have read the book, then I say maybe watch it, just as a visual...I grew up watching the cartoon versions, I would recommend those- they have some humor, unlike this movie and are a little less real, but still get the whole picture.
The part where Lehi's Family takes Ishmael's family to wife is a little strange to me- I didnt like how they all got married at one time in one ceremony and Nephi's wife- c'mon- she didnt even look the part- it looked like they pulled her right off Provo streets...with a UT accent and everything.
Overall the casting and acting was not great- especially all the females- I always imagined Sariah older than that. and Ishmael's wife and Sariah acted completely UT. (they just have this fakeness about them- almost like they are on drugs)
Compared to the cartoon depictions of the Book of mormon however, I did feel this was more realistic- and not just because they are people, and those were cartoons.
I am planning on owning this movie and the collection, and I look forward to the next one. Despite the bad qualities of the film, overall it was worth seeing and owning. I am a little dissapointed though, because I thought I would be the first to actually make a movie of the Book of Mormon, but I must say that Gary Roger's did a pretty good job.
If you go to http://www.ldsfilm.com/BoM/BookOfMormon.html, you can read more about it. Taken from that website,
"This is a very unique motion picture," stated Gary Rogers, the film's producer, writer and director. "Virtually every member of the Church I've talked to has told me they have waited all their lives to see a movie about the Book of Mormon! It really is a filmmaker's dream. However, the biggest challenge will be to produce a film that satisfies the audience. Most of the nearly 12 million members of the Church have already "seen" the movie many times in their minds! The prospect of meeting the expectations of millions of people is a very frightening but exciting challenge," say's Rogers.
You can understand why there will be many people who hate it and many that like it and many that love it.
