DVD Review: Fear I Will Be Disappointed....
Summary: 1 Stars
Please note I was merely looking at buying this video. So I haven't dropped a penny on it. Alas, although I am impressed who is listed in this DVD, I am also disappointed with who isn't in this video.
When you put up a wall, you got to know not only who you are walling in - but who you are walling out! And by the looks of the great artists listed, it appears the producers of this video have left out quite a few other great artists from Johnny's series.
Where is Johnny with Melanie?
Where is Johnny with Buffie Saint Marie?
Johnny sang "Custer" with Buffie. That duet was as much a classic as Johnny singing with Louis Armstrong. Sounds like the producers have provided us with their own compromised version (a subjective "Best of") of Johnny. And in doing so have come way too short of showing the true breadth of what the man stood for.
So if you are simply into Johnny's commercial successes and have neither heard nor fully appreciated his take on the life of a great Pima Indian Ira Hayes, then this is for you. Yet if you are into Johnny a little deeper because of his songs on Ira Hayes, Custer and Delia, then this set will ostensibly not get you to the heart of this great iconic human being.
What someone needs to do is put out a DVD with "ALL" his shows from that era. Un-edited. That should include "ALL" solos and duets from "EVERY" performer to ever set foot on his way-too-short show. Period! Otherwise I will continue going somewhat haphazardly to YouTube for the comprehensive version.
If someone would please produce something in video as Rick Rubin has done with Johnny's legacy in audio, I would be eternally grateful. In that spirit, thanks to Rick Rubin for doing what he did for Johnny's career - very classy gesture for him lending his very able hand to put Johnny back up on pedestal where he forever belongs. I would buy anything about Johnny produced by Rick Rubin - he seems to get Johnny's essence! Moroever, he doesn't be appeared blinded by any measure of avarice.
While I am keeping it real, actually not surprised that the movie "I Walk the Line" didn't win an Academy Award. In short, Joachin Phoenix is arrogant. Johnny Cash is humble. And it is JP's arrogance that he couldn't hold back in his character - thus comprising his portrayal of Johnny Cash. So good on the academy for getting it right on this one. One doesn't want to applaud an actor so missing the mark on humility - Johnny's essence!
On the other hand, thought Reese Witherspoon captured June Carter remarkably well. Great job Reese! Not surprised with her getting "Best Actress" award. Tennessee (and June & John in the heavens) must be so proud of her!

BEST OF THE JOHNNY CASH SHOW - DVD MovieDuring the late 1960s and early '70s, Johnny Cash introduced country fans and viewers of his weekly variety show to hand-picked artists-- some contemporary country's best?whom they may not have otherwise had exposure to. This "best of" anthology is a little more random than its title suggests, omitting the duet with Bob Dylan from the program's debut (perhaps the best remembered highlight from the series) in favor of a duet with the then-emerging Joni Mitchell on "Girl From the North Country," and including a hokey arrangement of "I've Been Everywhere" with Lynn Anderson. Yet Ray Charles' soulful recasting of "Ring of Fire" is a revelation, and a roster ranging from Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes to Roy Orbison to George Jones and (separately) Tammy Wynette made for some memorable television. --Don McLeese
