DVD Reviews of The Bed Sitting RoomDVD Review: Some day our prints will come Summary: 5 StarsI first saw this in London on a trip there in 1974 and have been waiting all this time for it to be offered here. It's brilliant subtle comedy as only the British did it back then. A mixture of irony, nonsense and sarcasm that doesn't seem to be made any more. I have a good tape of it but won't rest easy until I get it on DVD.
DVD Review: The Bed-Sitting Room Summary: 5 StarsI watched this film twice in one sitting and was thrilled and moved by it. It is visionary, hugely funny and strangely gentle. You get the impression that the long list of stars all know they're taking part in something unique and timeless. Like a fusion of Dylan Thomas and Samuel Beckett, it stands up to both with great integrity and real wit. Sadly, most of those taking part are now dead. I really hope that a celebratory DVD release comes along in time to catch what reminiscenses there may still be.
DVD Review: Bizarre, amazing - unavailable! Such a shame.... Summary: 5 StarsI have never seen another film like this one. Post-apocalypse comedy has been done before, of course, but not like this. A refugee family, forced to leave the subway car they've been living in, unable to properly claim their luggage, hikes over endless hills of broken crockery and rubber boots...it's a love story, of sorts, though it's sad when mum is notified that she's dead and then turns into a closet. The cast is amazing for fans of British comedy: Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe, Rita Tushingham, Marty Feldman, Ralph Richardson, Henry Woolfe.
It's a terrible shame that this isn't available on dvd, or vhs even. Richard Lester's oddly paced humor really shines in this unique and weirdly touching movie. See it if you can find a copy somewhere - you'll never look at starvation or childbirth in quite the same way again!
DVD Review: no, "a" lord snowden. Summary: 5 StarsI'm glad someone is at least thinking of the possibility of getting this film out on any format. I hadn't seen it in 30 years until I noticed it was playing on TMC last month, once, and I signed up with the cable company just so I could tape this rare gem.
Richard Lester is associated with a number of interesting projects (the Beatles of course, and the brilliant Petulia, also still not out on DVD) but nothing this intensely insane and totally wild, probably because its hard to think of any movie ever this idiocynchratically perfect.
A couple of years after a nuclear attack, a couple dozen Londoners continue to carry on with the british way of life, amidst the ruins and mutations. Written by Spike Milligan, it is entirely an ensemble piece featuring the likes of Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Marty Feldman, Ralph Richardson and Lester fave, Rita Tushingham.
Very much of its time, bold and dark. Not a bad companion piece to Strangelove. Difficult to find, and well worth the effort.
