DVD Reviews of The Beatles - Fun With the Fab Four

DVD Review: Frustrating
Summary: 2 Stars

I, for one, get a kick out of the irony of some of these Beatles DVD titles. "Beatles Celebration," for instance. That film did not celebrate the Beatles at all. Then there was "The Legend Continues," which was just another rehash of previously seen footage, only "continuing" to get some quick cash out of unsuspecting Beatles fans. Now there's "Fun With The Fab Four," which truthfully isn't fun at all.

I purchased this DVD back to back with the "Beatles Unauthorized" film, and after viewing them both, I must say that this one is far more disappointing. The footage is not in the best quality and can usually be seen elsewhere in far clearer picture and sound. Often times, one clip cuts to another, with the first clip's audio still playing underneath. Then it cuts back. I find this type of editing to be very annoying. There are a few moments I enjoyed, but overall it is cheap garbage. I would, however, recommend the "Beatles Unauthorized" DVD - at least that one has some concert footage, and the editing isn't as jumpy.

DVD Review: Fun With the Fab Four
Summary: 4 Stars

It was good but not exceptional. I also purchased another DVD, First Tour of U.S. and would recommend it.

DVD Review: Only for hardcore Beatles fans
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely loved this DVD. I was a little skeptical at first because it was so cheap, but it was such a bargain. I wouldn't recommend this DVD to the casual Beatles fan, however. It is filled with rare interviews with the boys, from various cities on various tours. There's no music in it, just an hour of talking, but it is well worth it. The interviews are treaures, to see the interaction between the four members. They were very close and it shows. The Pyramus and Thisbe skit is so hilarious, I would have bought it just for that one scene. There are many numerous hilarious moments withing this DVD. Like John saying that The Beatles is just a name "you know, like shoe. We could have been called the Shoes for all you know." Things like that. There are some things on this that are also in Anthology, but it is still well worth it.

DVD Review: A must buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

When my friend brought her copy of "Fun with the Fab Four" over to my house today, I thought it looked stupid. The name does make it sound as though it will be, but when she told me it was not, I agreed to watch it. Especially when I found out the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch was in it, something I had been dyeing to see ever since I first saw a picture of John in those pigtails. Anyway, as the other reviewers have said, if you'r not much of a beatles fan, stear clear. This is really only for those leaning toward obsessive. If you are like me, (I bought Ringo a sixty-fourth birthday present) this dvd is a wonder beyond your wildest dreams. The interviews are interesting and almost constantly hilareous, and the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch is worth it all on its own. That sketch is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen. ("I'm the man on the moon, this is my thorn branch, and this doggie woggie here is my dog!" ...priceless) The part from Japanese television in which the picture didn't match the sound was confusing (Ringo's mouth is moving, but John's voice is coming out!), but apart from that, I think it is one of my favorite Beatles DVDs, and I own a good amount (anthology, unauthorized, A hard days night, help, magical mystery tour, and soon Let it Be, hopefully), all of which I hold in very high regard. I plan to buy Fun with the Fab Four as soon as possible, and at the price it has, there is no reason to pass it up! Its going for a penny in the used section! oh, and if anyone knows where to get George Harrison's pirate song sketch from Eric Idle's television program, Id be much obliged. thanks!

DVD Review: For Obsessive Fans Only!
Summary: 5 Stars

If like the Beatles, but aren't too crazy for them, do not buy this movie. You'll find it boring, hard to follow, and won't be able to make out most of what they're saying.
But if you're a truly obsessed Beatles fan, THIS MOVIE IS A NECESITY! You may think you've seen everything there is to see, what with the Beatles Anthology, the First US Visit, AHDN, and etc., but your knowlege of the Beatles is incomplete without seeing this movie. In the Anthology, for example, you only see the first minute or so of John's apology for his Jesus statement at a Chicago press conference in August of 1966. It ends with "I said what I said, and it was wrong, or was taken wrong, and now it's all this!" In this movie, however, you can hear the rest of his statement. Also, in the First US Visit DVD, you see only part of their first press conference at JFK airport. Did you know they swore in it? I didn't! It's an incredibly mild swear, but I was still very surprised to hear the Beatles say it in public that early on. Sure, they swore a lot (and I mean A LOT) even back in the Hamburg/Cavern days, but here, they were supposed to be clean cut boys!
You'll find it interesting, hilarious, and even though it is incomprehensible at moments, (if you're a truly obsessive Beatlemaniac) you'll rewind and rewatch/relisten to the scenes until you're able to know everything they said. John is his usual hilarious self, and you'll crack up at almost everything he has to say.
I just finished watching it for the first time, and am incredibly pleased. I haven't previously seen much of anything that was shown here. My sister and father, casual Beatles fans, started watching it with me, but left in the middle of it, saying it was too boring. I couldn't disagree more! I completely into it, smiling like an idiot through the whole thing (as I always do with anything that has anything to do with the Fab Four).
Great movie!
