DVD Review: "The Most Graphic Case of Rape On Film" Summary: 5 Stars The Accused" is based on an actual true story of a woman who was brutally gang raped by three men. Jodie Foster plays Sara Tobias, who goes to a roadside bar one night after arguing with her boyfriend. Friendly dancing and chitchat leads Sara to be put on top of a jukebox by a man who rapes her. Two other men join in on the rape, while others watch and cheer as if they were at a sporting event. The film is about a woman who hires an attorney to bring her assailants to justice, as well as seeing that those who applauded the rapes are also charged.
Jodie Foster became a certifiable actress in "The Accused", for she won 1988's Oscar as Best Actress, and also brought rape issues to the forefront of American consciousness. Kelly McGillis, who is a rape survivor in real life, plays the attorney who fights for Sara and others like her.
An eye-opening and raw film, "The Accused" is not for everyone. The script, direction, and acting are all top-notch, but the subject matter is unsettling. However, this sort of film needed to be made to show others how brutal men can be to their female counterparts.
The hardest scene in the film to watch is the gang rape itself: producers wisely showed it toward the end of the film so we could get to know the character of Sara and feel for her attack. Jodie Foster actually blacked out while doing the rape scene, and the men who played the attackers had a hard time performing the graphic and horrifying rapes. Jodie had to calm the actors down and help them through their scenes.
"The Accused" comes with the theatrical trailer and is in widescreen format, but unfortunately there are no other bonuses. It would have been nice if a documentary on the movie would have been included.
The film was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
DVD Review: I'm a Jodie Foster fan alright! Summary: 5 StarsI'm biased. I just think that Jodie Foster is an enigma in terms of an actress.
This is a great movie, gritty, moody and thought provoking!! I'll not repeat blah, blah, blah movie reviews.
Just one to watch, it's a good direction in terms of making you see all sides. If I had teenage kids, I'd get them to watch this!
Good show Ms. Foster!
DVD Review: 3 stars out of 4 Summary: 4 StarsThe Bottom Line:
Aside from the extremely disquieting and graphic rape sequence, this film is pretty formulaic and essentially what you'd expect going in; it's well-made enough to be worth recommending if you like courtroom dramas but it's not terribly memorable.
Description of The AccusedA young woman is gang raped in a bar. She battles the legal system twice as she and her attorney go after both her attackers and the bystanders who cheered them on. Genre: Feature Film-Drama Rating: R Release Date: 28-MAR-2006 Media Type: DVD Jodie Foster won her first Oscar for her role in this drama, based on an actual incident. She plays a girl out for a night of fun at a poolroom. Before she knows what's happening, the men she's been flirting with have pinned her down for a gang rape. The story centers on the efforts of a district attorney (Kelly McGillis) to press her case, in spite of a wall of silence by the participants--and then to take the unusual step of going after the witnesses as accomplices. Foster is outstanding as a tough, blue-collar woman who persists in what seems like an unwinnable case, despite the prospect of character assassination for standing up for herself. --Marshall Fine
