DVD Reviews of Thank You Australia Concert: Live 1976DVD Review: An essential dvd from a legendary artist Summary: 5 StarsIn 1972 Neil recorded his classic live album Hot August Night (Remastered / Expanded) (2CD). It was the very first Neil Diamond album I ever bought, and although I have bought most of his albums, it remains the single album I listen to most to this day, and I consider it his best work.
I often wondered what it would be like to have been there to witness that historic event, and I did not know this dvd existed until I accidentally encountered it in my local record store a few days ago.
A little bit of research shows the level of Neil's popularity in Australia. His Hot August Night album was No 1 for a staggering 29 weeks in Australia, and reputedly owned in 1 out of every 4 households. This particular concert was broadcast live throughout Australia. It also set an attendance record at the Sydney sports grounds.
As I watched the video I noticed that this was Hot August night brought to visual life. The shimmering presence, the showmanship, the sparkly shirt, the beautiful rhythms, the rich resonant voice, and holding the stadium and the nation in the palm of his hand.
Quite simply, Australia Tribute is an opportunity to witness Neil at his very best.
Some other reviewers have made issue about the sound quality. I have a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma tv with standard tv speakers. I noticed on the second song a little bit of hiss at the end, and turned down the treble and it disappeared. The colors were a little bright and I also had to adjust the colors a little. Other than that everything was perfect.
The extras with this dvd are excellent, and include Neil Diamond's first extended tv interview, 47 minutes, quite revealing, and the live commercial breaks from the stage with Neil being the sponsor are very amusing. A perfect gift for a Neil Diamond fan, or for yourself.
I hope you found this review helpful, and I think you'll love it.
DVD Review: An Aussie Perspective Summary: 5 StarsWhen I came across this DVD recently, I couldn't wait to get it home and re-live this amazing concert. I went to this concert in Melbourne, Australia, the week before this was recorded in Sydney, however it was the identical concert. The venue in Melbourne was the Myer Music Bowl, an open-air auditorium. The only downside to the evening was that it poured rain all night, but the audience was so involved in the show, that I didn't see a single person leave. We all just sat on the wet ground, (there were no seats), and witnessed the most mind-blowing concert I have seen in my 60+ years. To be able to re-live this memorable evening is more than I could have hoped for. I migrated from Australia almost 20 years ago and now live in Seattle, so I have seen Neil in concert twice since. His most recent one sent the same shivers down my spine as the Australian concert did. He is just an amazing singer/songwriter, or as the buzz-word back then was, "The first true Superstar".
For true fans, I also recommend his latest video, Hot August Night, NYC, another amazing concert video. For a man in his 60's, it is amazing that he can still sound so good. Age has taken nothing away from his voice or his ability to entertain. My only criticism: Why wasn't this released on Bluray, with lossless audio? Oh well, we can't have everything, I guess. Maybe it will still come.

DVD Review: Bad Audio Summary: 3 StarsThis dvd could have been something special but the audio is so bad that i can't even watch more than a few songs before i get tired of the terrible sound and turn it off, ND recently released a Hot August Night NYC (2008) dvd that has FAR superior audio - do yourself a favor and buy that dvd - not this one.
DVD Review: Pure nostalgia Summary: 4 StarsI was present at this concert in 1976 at the Sydney Sports Ground. I had seen Neil in concert at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney a couple of weeks earlier. Although I agree with some of the comments about the sound and overall quality of the actual video, watching this concert brings back a lot of memories. This was at the time when Neil Diamond was probably the biggest individual music star on the planet and his concert tour of Australia had been eagerly anticipated. I also remember that tickets to his concert were priced at the extraordinarily high price of $15, yes fifteen dollars. The video does not capture the atmosphere of the concert and I can assure you that no one who was there went away disappointed. I have just also purchased and watched Neil'd new DVD Hot August Night NYC which is an absolutely brilliant display of showmanship, 33 years on. Despite the fact that many of the critics ridicule him, Neil Diamond has been and remains one of the truly great performers of our generation, with songs that will endure forever.
DVD Review: Neil Diamond: Thank You Australia, 1976 Summary: 5 StarsAll these reviews have made excellent points, and the shortcomings, from today's perspective, have been validly pointed out - but I want to emphasize that this concert was 33 YEARS AGO! Yes, we have come a LONG way since then in audio/video production for live concerts, but we must understand that wasn't the way it was in those days. And, yes, Neil is older now ... but: AREN'T WE ALL? Putting it all into perspective: ABBA had just barely won the Eurovision Song Contest and were just barely getting off the ground. Now, doesn't THAT seem like it happened in the Stone Age? So much has happened since those days. IF you are a Neil Diamond fan, appreciate this concert for what it was then: totally dynamic. Speaking just for myself: I feel darn lucky to have come across this DVD and have added it to my collection ... love it! It arrived today, and I IMMEDIATELY sat down and watched it. Sure, we WISH we had the modern production techniques back then to have smoothed all sorts of stuff out (such as not having TV cameras with numerous low shots into glaring overhead lights), but I'm sure they did the best with what they had at the time. As I mentioned in a prior review of his HOT AUGUST NIGHT/NYC performance (DVD): we saw his show live in Paris the year after this '76 concert. Yes, it was classic (young) Neil Diamond ... dynamic ... awesome performance. And this DVD reminds me so much of that Paris gig. I will put in a plug for the HOT AUGUST NIGHT/NYC DVD, again, however. It HAS all the modern audio/video techniques fully utilized ... with a bigger band ... totally awesome experience. I would unhesitatingly recommend BOTH DVDs for your collection if you're a fan.
UPDATE: 11-06-09: Just watched this concert again. It was the first time since my initial review, above. We turned off the lights, cranked up the sound, and WE WERE THERE! This concert is totally absorbing. Diamond has those 38,000 people at the concert ... and my wife and I here at home ... in the palm of his hand. Classic Diamond songs ... powerful ... VERY powerful. His music has always appealed to my very soul, and it was not a whit different tonight watching the concert again. I was transformed back to the time of long hair, flowered shirts, bell-bottomed jeans, and great ... GREAT ... Neil Diamond music! I am sooooo glad I had the opportunity to buy this superb DVD!
Over ... and out ... :-)
Description of Thank You Australia Concert: Live 1976Neil Diamond is an American legend. He is one of the finest and most successful songwriters of the last forty years as well as being a multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the most dynamic and consummate live performers of his generation. This concert from the Sydney Sports Stadium was the culmination of his Australia & New Zealand tour in 1976, an event that marked his comeback to the live stage after a creatively fruitful four year sabbatical from live performance. The vast crowd was typical of this record-breaking tour, still one of the most memorable in Australian history, and Neil Diamond delivered the enthralling performance of a true showman.
