DVD Reviews of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Three Pack (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II - The Secret of the Ooze/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III)

DVD Review: for the kid ninja in most of us (or some of us)
Summary: 4 Stars

To quote from an article, "One night in 1984, Comic Artist Kevin Eastman came home from a party one night with his fellow artist and friend Peter Laird and felt like drawing some random pictures of something that would capture his mood of feeling silly." Kevin got the crazy notion (probably from having too many drinks) to draw a big turtle wearing a mask and holding a pair of nuchukus. Peter drew some pictures along with Kevin just for the sake of entertaining a silly notion. Little did they know that a simple drawing would soon become a million dollar franchise. Ninja Turtle Mania swept America from 1987 to 1993. From cloths, food, toys, a television series, and video games to live action movies, Ninja Turtles marked one of America's cultural icons. Now onto the Ninja Turtle movie trilogy... The first film in 1989 not only captured the live action accuracy of the comic based turtles, it also did a good job of explaining the long rival between Splinter and Shredder as well as how the turles came to be along with managing to draw casual movie viewers to becoming fans of the Ninja Turtles story. The script was well written in terms of character and plot development. Not only that, the acting was very believable for costumed turtles and the villains weren't cartoony so to say. The dvd version is in widescreen and offers some bonus features though not anything extraordinary. On a sad note, the picture and sound quality are not up to par for dvd standards but this does not take away in my opinion from the enjoyment of watching the movie. In 1991, the sequel 'Secret of the Ooze' hit theaters following right where the first movie left off. Though I can see why it received mixed reviews, I enjoyed it as much as the first. Granted, the producers took a risk aiming the sequel solely at ninja turtle fans versus the casual movie viewer. The violence was toned down a bit, the comedy level was turned up a notch, and Casey Jones did not return. Despite all that, the film did a good job revisiting the origin of the ooze as well as how the turtles came to be. There were also other mutants added to the film, the actress who replaced April from the first movie did just as good of a job, and though the concept of Shredder drinking the ooze at the end was somewhat corny, it still faired well. Who can also forget the uncalled for yet entertaining scene with Vanilla Ice's "Ninja Rap" near the end of the movie? The dvd version is in widescreen and offers a good bonus feature different from the first movie though that is about it. At least the picture and sound quality for the Secret of the Ooze dvd is clear and crisp. The second ninja turtles movie did well enough at the box office to spawn yet another sequel 'Turles In Time'. By this point in late 1993, the ninja turtle fad had begun to die down and not as many people were flocking to the theater to see what would be the last installment of the ninja turtle films. Turtles in Time was quite different from the standard plot of the ninja turtle adventures doing away with Shredder, the foot clan, and present New York City for that matter. The third ninja turtle flick unfortunately did not do well at the box office. I personally feel that it was highly underrated. Sure, the costumes were different, some of the actors were different, the concept of going back to 17th century Japan was far fetched, and I will agree that Turtles In Time should not have been an end to the series. Still, Casey Jones returned even if his role was not as involved as say April's, there were plenty of action sequences along with fight scenes, and I think what made the movie shine was showing the educational history of ancient Japan which included trading with the Europeans as well as the culture wars while mixing the ninja turtle adventure along with it. Because of these good aspects, I enjoyed this third installment as much as the previous two. The dvd version like the previous is in widescreen and has good picture/sound quality. The bonus features on the downside are the exact same as the previous sequel. Nothing new was added. My overall opinion of the trilogy is that each film managed to entertain the ninja turtle fan such as myself. If you are grown and had never been into ninja turtles, you may not enjoy these movies. Otherwise, you turtle fans out there should agree that the movies might not have been so good had they been based on the original cartoon series versus the comics. As for my review on the dvds themselves, more bonus features should have been added. There was a separate vhs release called Behind the Shells that showed the making of the first two ninja turtle movies. In the video, cast members were interviewed, puppeteering effects in addition with coordinated fight sequences were shown along with outtakes, an interview with the director, conversations with Keven Eastman and Peter Laird on creating the ninja turtles comic series along with how they came up with the character of Oroku Saki a.k.a Shredder (can you tell I've been a turtle fan for sometime?). This documentary should have been added as a bonus disk to the boxset along with deleted scenes, music videos, and bonus episodes from the new ninja turtles series. Maybe a director's cut of all three movies could have been done as well. I also want to mention that all three movies had excellent soundtracks that I still listen to from time to time. Oh well, one can only hope that a special edition re-release is in the near future following the next ninja turtles movie should it ever get made.
