DVD Review: A nice pair (even if VAULT is cut) . . .

TALES FROM THE CRYPT / VAULT OF HORROR Even though I watched these on TV (edited :( ) as a kid, they were a particular treat on DVD as about a two years ago, I won three sets of the EC comics reprints of TALES, VAULT, HAUNT, WEIRD SCIENCE et. al. on Ebay and, having read most of them in the past year or so, I was familiar with all the stories in these films except one! They're remarkably faithful without all the campiness that later directors often brought to the HBO TV series in the 90's. TALES looks to be uncut with some rather eye-opening gore, while VAULT does suffer some rather jarring edits (and a particularly egregious use of still frames that mask extended bits of unpleasantness) but not enough to kill the flow, and there's still a good bit of grue left intact. Still, an uncut version would be nice.DVD Review: "Tales" great ... "Vault" awful!

It's difficult to say anything that hasn't already been discussed.
This is packaged as a double-feature. You receive both "Tales From The Crypt" and "The Vault Of Horror".
Tales From The Crypt is fantastic. It's Widescreen, has incredible picture/sound and is UN-CUT! It DOES contain the shots of the beating heart in one segment and it DOES contain the shot of the man's intestines in the other segment.
The Vault Of Horror is a different story. Although it IS Widescreen and contains the best picture/sound quality that you're likely to find anywhere else, it suffers from SEVERE edits. These edits make the film feel lousy and as if you were (and you WERE) ripped off. The soundtrack even jumps, making it evident that edits were made. Instead of seeing the un-cut version, you see still-frames... it looks just terrible.
To sum it up, if you want an outstanding copy of Tales From The Crypt, this is the way to go. However, if you're looking for the best of the best, when it comes to The Vault Of Horror, look somewhere else.
The sad part is that Fox KNOWS very well that consumers have nowhere else to turn to. False advertising/fraud on Fox's part is NOT acceptable! Frankly, TVOH is poor enough to warrant a boycott, online petition, etc. to prove our disappointment and outrage.
Again, get this for Tales From The Crypt. Do NOT get it for The Vault Of Horror!
