DVD Reviews of Taiji Martial Applications (YMAA Tai Chi) 37-PosturesDVD Review: Taiji 37 Postures is a teaching dvd Summary: 5 StarsThe master has done it again. It is nice to know the form but for the martial artist that is not enough. You need to learn the application of the movements of the form. With that movement you can correctly execute the form. It becomes a part of you not just something you do to warm up.
Dr. Yang gives you some history and knowledge of taiji and what it is for. We are fortunate enough to have an interpreter of ancient Chinese secrets, no pun intended.
If you have learned the Yang form and would like to improve your execution and understanding then add this video and the companion book, if you can, to your library. Dr. Yang has done a great job of explaining not only the application of the forms but the meaning behind them. Each time you play this dvd you will learn something. This is not only a teaching dvd it is a learning dvd so take plenty of notes.
DVD Review: A different perspective Summary: 5 StarsIf you, like me, want to understand the history and martial arts applications of the flowing moves behind Tai Chi, buy this DVD! The lecture alone about the practical aspects of Tai Chi was excellent. The form demonstrations are masterful, and the explanation of martial applications was a most welcome change of perspective. This DVD can be returned to over and over as your martial arts training progresses.
DVD Review: A must for anyone who wants to better understand Taiji and the martial applications found within the forms. Summary: 5 StarsTaiji or Tai Chi is practiced around the world for its health benefits. In fact, many who study and teach this ancient Chinese art only practice and teach for health and longevity reasons. For some, this is fine, however they are missing the roots of the art, which were based on martial applications. The motions that help cultivate "chi" are rooted in self-defense. According to Dr. Yang, real Taijiquan is knowing the martial art applications. This video program focuses on such applications to the forms.
"Taiji 37 Postures Martial Applications" with Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming states on the front cover, "Learn the Self-Defense Moves Hidden In Every Tai Chi Posture" The program actually offers much more than that.
The DVD starts with a lecture by Dr. Yang at a white board explaining his view on training for health and for martial arts. (He does bring in a student to help illustrate and explain a couple of concepts) Dr. Yang is an expert in both, and his insights are revealing and educational. This lecture is thirty-six minutes long and covers some very important Chinese and martial concepts.
Next there is a Taijiquan form demonstration. Dr. Yang and his daughter, Kathy, perform the form with subtitles across the bottom of the screen labeling the movements. This takes just under five minutes.
The third part of the DVD is Taijiquan Martial Applications - Part One. One thing I liked, right at the beginning of the section, was Dr. Yang's explanation of why his Taiji today is different from what he was doing in his first video back in 1984. In this section, the martial applications from various moves in the form are illustrated by Dr. Yang with his students. The instruction is clear, but there are also subtitles across the bottom. Dr. Yang points out that this DVD just shows some applications and he wants you to analyze the forms yourself to master the forms and techniques. This portion of the program is about eighty-six minutes long.
Part two of the Taijiquan martial applications comes next. Dr. Yang continues his instruction of applications using students to illustrate his teaching for the second part of the Taijiquan form. This section takes about thirty-six minutes.
Tajiquan Martial Applications - Part Three continues with additional instruction on the third part of the form. Like the previous sections, Dr. Yang shows the movement and then applications on his students, along with commentary and explanations. This section is about thirty-three minutes long including the form at the end. Dr. Yang again says this DVD only gives you an idea so you can learn to analyze the forms and discover applications yourself. He also takes time to thank his students and daughter. The form is then shown again being demonstrated by Dr. Yang and Kathy Yang.
The DVD has excellent menus allowing the viewer to go right to the section of the program he or she wishes to review. The picture and lighting are well done and over all is a very well produced instructional DVD. Additionally, there are the YMAA extras that include information about YMAA, their catalog, and previews of many other titles.
There really is a lot of information on this disk. Besides the applications and encouragement to analyze the forms yourself, Dr. Yang provides so many little tips and additional information to make you a better martial artist. I believe this DVD is a must for anyone who wants to better understand Taiji and the martial applications found within the forms.

DVD Review: Time and money well spent Summary: 5 StarsI have studied Yang style taijiquan for over 10 years, and found Dr. Yang's presentation excellent. I think this DVD is best suited for advanced beginners and beyond.
Some of my thoughts about Taiji 37 Postures:
- Very thorough; Dr. Yang's knowledge of the subject is very deep,
- Highly organized presentation; easy to follow; great attention to detail,
- Good presentation style; professional, yet informal,
- Covers taiji history in a manner that adds value to what he discussing,
- Brings martial aspect of taijiquan to life in an authoritative way,
- Nice explanation of fighting "ranges" and their influence on applications,
- "An", or push, was clarified masterfully (amazing how cultural interpretation of a seemingly innocent word, "push" in this case, can sort of confuse things,
- Use of whiteboard added much value to Dr. Yang's presentation,
- Point regarding application of breathing (inhale vs exhale) when issuing or yielding was subtle, but significant.
Much of my taiji practice is done alone. I have a number of Dr. Yang's books about taiji, but this is my first DVD - and I will, due to viewing this DVD, invest more in internal martial arts DVDs. While a DVD is not a substitute for a live instructor, it can prime you well for live instruction, augment live instruction, or offer a solid alternative when you truly have no live instruction option.
Overall, I think this video is outstanding.
DVD Review: Quality Instruction for Intermediate Students Summary: 5 StarsTo start out this review, I would have to agree with the recommendation of the producers that the material presented in this video is best suited for the intermediate practitioner and not so much the novice or beginner. However, there are plenty of things that a beginner could learn, but there is a lot more that would simply be too advanced for the simple novice.
Like the vast majority of videos produced by YMAA, this video comes in at 3 hours in length and is definitely worth every penny spent and every minute of your time to watch.
In this video, you will get a fairly in-depth lesson in the practical applications of Taiji, as well as, Dr. Yang going in-depth and with quite a lot of detail on each one of the 37 positions in the Yang short form, and demonstrating the practical application of each of those positions on an opponent.
This, just like all of Dr. Yang's videos, is not a video that you can watch just once, twice, or even a dozen times and get all out of the video that there is. You must watch this video numerous times over an extended period of time in order to fully realize the significant amount of knowledge that it contains. Now each person learns in different ways and at different speeds, so some of you may not have to watch at quite as many times as someone else in order to harvest all the knowledge that it contains, but the idea is to keep reviewing it periodically in order to refresh your memory and perhaps even cement the knowledge learned during the previous viewings.
Perhaps the single biggest underlying lesson that Dr. Yang teaches in this video is how to think for yourself by analyzing the form from all angles and to take it apart and really understand all that it has to offer you besides the obvious; punches, blocks, and kicks.
