DVD Review: So good I got one for a friend

This dvd was absolutely fabulous. A friend of mine was watching it with me and was really into the show so I got one for him. I am somewhat biased about Styx (if I could only listen to one musical group, it would be them) but even though the concert was from 1996, I thought the digital quality was excellent. My only regret was that I couldn't turm my surround sound system any louder.DVD Review: NOT a Styx fan...and I love it!

First of all, as my subject line indicates, I'm actually NOT that much of a Styx fan. Prior to purchasing this DVD, I had always been simply a casual radio listener, with respect to their more well-known hits, and didn't own any of their individual albums (actually, I still don't). And you can count me among those who found Dennis DeYoung's vocals and penchant for theatrical bombast rather...annoying. With all of that in mind, it was an odd whim on my part to buy this DVD when I saw it in a store.
I'm glad that I did, because it is an extremely enjoyable concert DVD...I would even go so far as to say it's one of my favorites in my music DVD collection. Regardless of whatever interpersonal tensions may have existed in the band (from what I've read), here is a band playing their @sses off for their audience, and looking for all the world like they're having a blast doing it. And they sound REALLY good. Shaw and JY are a terrific one-two punch on guitar (as a guitarist myself, I can particularly appreciate the way they interact and compliment each other), their new drummer (well, new at the time, anyway) is outstanding, and...surprise of surprises...DeYoung actually impressed the heck out of me with his vocals. His voice is strong, clear, absolutely on-pitch, and seems to have improved with age. Honestly, he was the part of the show I most dreaded seeing/hearing, and he ended up being the biggest pleasant surprise! Yes, some of the cheese factor is still there, as others have mentioned, but it all works in the context of this show and their music. Besides DeYoung, the vocals for the band were terrific overall; I've always like Shaw's lead vocals, and those are NOT easy high harmonies to hit on many of their songs. The setlist is a pretty good mix...besides the obvious "big" radio hits, it was good to hear album cuts and "minor" hits like "Snowblind", "Lorelei", and my personal favorite of the entire show, the opening number, "Rocking in Paradise", which seems to distill all the best aspects of the band nicely and neatly in one song (and they look like they're having a hoot playing it). Sorry to the die-hard fans, but no, I do NOT miss "Mr. Roboto" in the setlist! Oh, and lest anyone think I forgot him, the bass-playing Panozzo may look like the most understated performer of the bunch, but I like that balance he provides in their stage show...he just looks like he's playing it cool, enjoying all the silliness going on around him...and his playing is great.
So...that's it for me. A non-Styx fan who thoroughly recommends this DVD to anyone who likes just a good old fun and well-done rock and roll performance. Grab a beer (or soda) and some chips, and enjoy!
DVD Review: Classic Styx Concert w/All Original Members

This is the definitive Styx lineup that you need to watch in order to experience the real Styx in Concert. Even though it is past their late 70's heyday, these guys still rock it pretty good. Some get annoyed by DeYoung's songs, and some think Tommy Shaw gets annoying too, but you have to face it, the two of them leading the band IS STYX, and they both lead this great concert. A must have for any Styx fan. CThe video could use some rematering, but they do have the audio in DD 5.1 which is nice.DVD Review: True entertainment

This is one hell of a concert! it's a little theatrical in feel and delivers track after track of Styx best and years later they sound just as good. The sound quaility is fantastic if you're using 5.1. If you want a trip down memory lane at speed this is a must have. DVD Review: very good

Ah, classic Styx doing their greatest hits in concert. That brings back great memories. This is a very good dvd and worth owning. It does make me miss Dennis, though. I'm sorry, but his ego and cheesyness were actually what defined Styx. I like his theatrics. And he was the driving force in the early days (when the only hit they had was Lady). If it wasn't for Dennis, I suspect Tommy wouldn't even be in the band! And JY just might be "flipping burgers" to borrow an expression from another review. They kicked him out of the band, so I'd say they're the one's with the egos, and now they play bars and fairs. This is a reminder of what Styx WAS, and I think they made a huge mistake kicking him out: for better or for worse, cheesy factors and all- he was the leader and defining character of the band- and this shows it.
