DVD Reviews of Stir Crazy

DVD Review: Absolutely perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

Stir Crazy is one of my all time favorites. It may have a lot to do with being an absolute fan of Richard Pryor when I was young, but of all his movies this one had a great plot and perfectly timed humor. I think Eddie Murphy's LIFE was also inspired by this movie. Still to this day I wonder what life would have been like once they escape. I mean trouble was their shadow. Looking back on it now, it's great to see all the young faces and marvel on just how time flies. If you never saw this movie, you just don't know what you're missing.

DVD Review: The best Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder movie ever!
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though the duo had done "Silver Streak" four years prior, this is the movie where the duo make chemistry. This is one of my favorite movies of all time! I got so many favorite scenes, like Richard teaching Gene how to act "bad" in prison, how they both end up sharing a cell with Grossberger, and when the gay dude kisses Pryor! This movie still holds up today, and a lot funnier than many movies today. Sad to say, the other two follow up movies are nowhere as good as this, because in the late 80s, Richard was getting sicker and his appearance was deteriorating. But, this is a classic, and it will leave you wanting more!

DVD Review: A Classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen! Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are great together!

DVD Review: These men are stir crazy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Gene Wilder and the late Richard Pryor are hilarious in this film, coming to California from New York to promote a business of theirs. They end up in jail because they were suspected of an armed bank robbery. At the bank, dressed in chicken costumes, the pair do a little dance. They remove the costumes, the real crooks themselves don them and hold up the newly-opened bank that Skip(Pryor) and Harry(Wilder) were promoting. Sidney Poitier, the star of 1967's GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER?,1988's SHOOT TO KILL and some others, does a wonderful directing job. One of the best films of winter 1980-81. Previously,Pryor and Wilder together filmed 1976's SILVER STREAK,and following SC,1989's SEE NO EVIL HEAR NO EVIL and 1991's ANOTHER YOU(the latter was each Pryor's and Wilder's very last film). Sadly, the good Lord took away Peoria,Illinois-born Pryor in 2005. Wilder, widower of Saturday Night Live comedienne Gilda Radner, since retiring from show business has successfully battled cancer. Although now cancer-free,Wilder remains retired.

DVD Review: The magic of Pryor and Wilder
Summary: 4 Stars

Stir Crazy is the best of the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor movies. Having recently re-watched it I had forgotten just how funny it was. There are a number of brilliantly realised scenes, particularly in the prison, which for those who remember it from years ago will bring back very happy memories and for the younger generation will introduce you to the best movie comedy double act of the 1970's and 1980's. The highlight of the film is undoubtably Skip (Wilder) and Harry (Pryor) being led to their cell in the prison. Both are acting tough, cool and way over the top and both are hilarious.

Interestingly the two main stars were poles apart in their approach to comedy. Richard Pryor was (sadly deceased in 2005) primarily a brilliant stand-up comedian, whereas Gene Wilder is a brilliant comic actor. The combination of the two reached its peak with this sparkling comedy. The film is directed by Sidney Poiter, and aside from the scenes after the prison, where the film loses some momentum and the level of humour drops a notch, this is a film you can watch repeatedly because of the two brilliant lead performances.

In reality if you removed the two lead actors there really isn't much of a film left, hence I can't give it five stars, but because of the special chemistry that Pryor and Wilder had it certainly deserves 4 stars.

Description of Stir Crazy

Skip and harry are framed for a bank robery and end up in a western prison. The two eastern boys are having difficulty adjusting to the new life until the warden finds that skip has a natural talent for riding broncos with the inter-prison rodeo coming up. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 07/19/2005 Starring: Gene Wilder Richard Pryor Run time: 111 minutes Rating: R
Sidney Poitier directed--without much distinction, sorry to say--this 1980 comedy teaming Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as New York knuckleheads who try their luck in California and are accused of robbing a bank. Most of the laughs concern their survival strategies in prison (at one point, Wilder decides to "reach out and talk" to some hulking murderer) and their plans to escape. Both performers are so brilliant in any situation that they give this film plenty of funny moments (one or two of which became instantly classic), but this is not exactly a film for the ages. --Tom Keogh
