DVD Review: True and Compelling

Did you ever spend time with a cousin or friend who you feel is inherently good but who does disturbingly bad things? You want to be away from this person you love, and then forget about being with him as soon as possible.
Then you watch Hollywood portrayals of such people or such families, for example, and know it's blatantly unrealistic and far more palatable than the truth.
Watch this movie. Stevie and his family reminds me of all this, and it's impossible to just forget about it. It's starkly real. It's not a big old downer trip, though. You'll enjoy it, and you'll laugh a bit. But it's real, and it's an education. There was a time when we expected that of our documentaries. Wasn't there?

Watch this movie to see just how much trouble our nation is in. Good people try to help a failed man raised by failed mom. But their attempts, of course, fail.
And that is our society: failure and ineptness.
We try to soothe ourselves--but this film cannot hide how damned, how mean, how troubled, how sad, how alone we are--so we say to each other, hollowly: "We're here for you".
DVD Review: It is unlikely you'll watch this film without being touched and grateful. A triumph of tradegy.

This documentary reminds you to appreciate your good fortunes and loved ones no matter what your challenges may be.
No matter what your challenges are, unless you were abandoned by your mother to be raised by foster homes and became a ward of the state, then your life could never be as hard as Stevie's.
This story reminds us how others are forced to adopt adversity as a reality that is long accepted and cruelty no longer has any distinction since it is a normality that permeates a life of abuse and struggle.
I'm going to limit my review w/o describing what has happened to Stevie to avoid spoiling this film, it has to be watched to be appreciated and it is unlikely you can walk away from this film w/o being grateful for the merits of your life regardless of whatever troubles you have to deal with.
Beyond just the main character, you'll be inspired by those surrounding Stevie who did their best to provide every chance or things as simple as a safe place to sleep and sadly, the most helpful were the strangers while his family held him in least regard and greatest contempt.
DVD Review: weird, could have been so much better

I wish I could give this 4 or even 5 stars but like everyone else has mentioned, the director, Stephen Fielding, is given too much face time. You might think it seems appropriate in that he had a prior relationship with Stevie when he was much younger but his story alone would have been good enough. Doesn't have that good 3rd person documentary perspective like a good documentary should. Too much like a reality show. Stevie's life is a sad tale worth looking into. DVD Review: stevie
