I grew up in Louisiana and this is a great movie (I'm a bit impartial) that presents the South beautifully and with a lot of humor. The story is based on a real family from Natchotiches and it is just wonderful. The cast is fantastic! Have a box of kleenex with you for the end and also, enjoy the music! This movie is an absolute MUST HAVE if you're a mother, a daughter, an aunt or grandmother; and it's a definite MUST HAVE if you're from the SOUTH!!! A-list actors abound & Dolly Parton is a hoot! Big thumbs up for Tom Skerritt as well. It's an enjoyable ride with lot's of "laughter through tears" which is Truvy's (Dolly's character) favorite emotion & if you liked Olympia as Cher's mother in 1987's "Moonstruck" you'll love her even more as Miss Clairee!!!DVD Review: So many classic lines

Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. --Tom Keogh
