Blu-ray Reviews of Stealth [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray Review: inept and boring
Summary: 1 Stars

They call it brainless fun, but it's not even fun. Yes, "Stealth" is that not-rare-enough bad movie that's actually so bad, it's no fun. It looks like there were several story ideas considered for the movie - and "Stealth" just uses them all, developing none of them.

We start off with an elite team of pilots flying hyper-technology fighters - the F/A-37 Talon. They can do anything, but the team played by Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas long more than anything else for a real mission to test their mettle. The opportunity comes when the team is detailed to an aircraft carrier - some chance at nabbing evil doers is inevitable. Unfortunately, it also teams our heroes up with EDI - an airplane with a mind of its own. When EDI decides that it has a better handle on its mission than its military handlers, it's up to the team to rein EDI in. Unfortunately, EDI's designers and its military design chief (played by Sam Shepard) can't afford to let the rest of the world learn of their psycho-UAV. Biel's character will eventually require rescue from hostile territory while Lucas will dogfight with and against EDI over Russia.

This was a horrible movie for so many reasons, at times utterly inept. You know the kind of movie that stuck-up critics complain about - the ones that are made only for teenage boys, when not even teenage boys will watch it? "Stealth" is that movie The flick is so determined to wow us with special effects, that we never stop realizing that we're watching an overlong CGI cartoon. (Recurring effects include impossible-without-CGI shots like those that seamlessly transition from a fighter plane in the distance to the interior.) The movie's other big flaw is that it never centers on a single story - there's an early subplot that has our heroes on vacation, followed by the disastrous debut of EDI (where it takes the characters an extra long time to realize what the audience pretty much pegged on first site: EDI is evil!!!)) followed by Lucas going up against a mysterious army of goons determined to keep EDI secret, followed by Biel evading capture in hostile N. Korea. The script never weaves these plot ideas - just discards the older for the newer.

Not quite as bad (until you factor in what this movie probably cost) is how sloppy it is, with all sorts of flubs or near-flubbery, all signifying that those who made this movie have a collective understanding of even basic aviation well below that of somebody cracking open "Microsoft Flight Simulator" for the first time. The designers over-did how futuristic their hardware was - never explaining why everything else looked much less sophisticated. EDI's voice effects sound more annoying than high-tech, and the interiors of our high-tech fighters (even accounting for technology) don't look convincingly like those of any aircraft. There's an explosive scene involving a huge floating gas tank - with accompanying visuals alternatively suggesting that it's standing still and zooming through the clouds at the same time, while an early battle scene has ground artillery positioned so that they're more likely to shoot each other than the flick's precious jets.

But worst of all, "Stealth" is just boring, raising the question of whether there's something inherent to military aviation that makes it impossible to base even a decent movie on.
