Blu-ray Reviews of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Remastered) [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray Review: The Voyage WHERE!?
Summary: 1 Stars

First of all, let me start by saying this 1-star review has NOTHING to do with the quality of the Blu-Ray. The 1080p resolution and the 7.1 TrueHD sound are simply stunning. Seriously. Shots of the Bounty (Kirk's Klingon Bird-of-Prey) will leave you feeling as though they were filmed with today's technology. It can't get much better than that.
The 1-star review is content-related. But I'd like to start with what I appreciate about the film. I appreciate that, when I was 13, this was my favorite film ever made. The humor was potent. The story placed my favorite characters in a time I could relate to. Plus I couldn't stop enjoying hearing Spock curse. When I was 13. I'll leave what happened over time for the next paragraph. I also thank this film for its wide critical acclaim. Thanks to that, and Leonard Nimoy's vision, Trek had the momentum to launch The Next Generation, which was a quintessential part of my life. (There was an attempt to launch a 1977 TV series, but the franchise just didn't seem like a surefire moneymaker then. "Voyage" changed that. Paramount realized Trek was very much alive after that.) I can even thank Number IV for breaking the Trek mold and standing out. Even the social commentary was something true to Roddenberry's original series, as is made clear by more than one TOS episode.
So ball all that up and you get the one star. Why it lacks four more: when one passes age 13, many things happen. Finding holes in "Voyage" may be at the top of the list (said tongue-in-cheek). We first get inconsistencies with the mysterious probe. We don't know where it came from, who made it, or where it goes after it leaves. The probe arrives at Earth, and, instead of, perhaps, developing a whalesong translator (they have the technology to make universal translators, after all), they (the crew of the Enterprise, a crew among the most pragmatic ever assembled) decide it would be easier to travel back in time and load a Bird-of-Prey up with two whales. I'd love to meet the Klingon who, when designing a warship - a ship where no space is wasted on emptiness, comfort, or non-battle-related uses - said, "Hey, we're gonna load this thing up with weapons to its dilithium teeth, but let's keep a wide open space in case her crew ever has to travel back in time and put whales in the thing." But okay, one could explain the space issue. Maybe it's there so Klingons can have somewhere to store the corpses of their enemies. Okay. But Catherine Hicks. I know you're not as dumb as you seem in this movie. I saw you on "7th Heaven." Okay, not the best example, but still. It takes you all of what? Three days to accept that Kirk is an admiral from the future who's got a ship parked in Golden Gate Park (in, by the way, the one corner of the park where no one happens to go except when the ship is landing, and at the very end when it scares the crap out of a couple of joggers who, I guess, were new to that route?). Three days? If I were Kirk, I'd say you'd have to be so crazy, I wouldn't take you to the mental institution, much less the 23rd Century. Furthermore, this film is at least in-part a social commentary. On an important issue. Our environment. But must that be the sole focus? I mean, we're coming off some pretty deep stuff in Treks II and III. The commentary was a little too preachy due to its prominance in the film. (Like I said, social commentary in Trek is great - it was part of the original plan - but you just can't keep it up for two hours+.) It watches like a long, bad TV movie. Not something for the screen. Not something the latest Trek has shown us - which was sheer brilliance.
Trek IV had so much potential. The Klingons are pissed at Kirk, and Kirk has a Bird-of-Prey. I'd have written a sort of cat-and-mouse game in which the Klingons go after Kirk, and so do the Federation - only the two want different things (the Federation want him tried, the Klingons want blood). The fact that Kirk has a Bird-of-Prey could then be used to hide within the Klingon Empire, disguised. But now I'm getting carried away. The point is: Trek is an intricate universe of relationships between species and characters, all of which could crumble in a breeze. That's extremely interesting. So why shove all that aside and say, "Let's travel back in time and save some whales."
I'm going against the grain with this review. The film is widely-liked, and I can see why. I'm glad it is, frankly. Trek couldn't have reproduced without that acclaim. Looking back on it, though, Trek IV offers a voyage home. And I'd rather not go.
