DVD Review: Not Quite The Definitive Collection of "Star Trek" Episodes Devoted to the Klingons

I concur with some other reviewers who regard this "Star Trek" DVD collection as a collection of some truly great episodes about the Klingons (Not surprisingly virtually all of the best episodes are from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".) mixed with a few that are not so great. Among my least favorite episodes in this collection is the "Star Trek: Enterprise" series pilot "Broken Bow" which opens this collection (I could have sworn that there were other, more compelling, episodes about the Klingons from this series.). However, it is followed on the same DVD by two of the best episodes from the original "Star Trek", "Errand of Mercy", which introduced both the Klingons and the Organian Peace Treaty, with splendid acting from the late John Colicos as Commander Kor, and of course, the classic "The Trouble with Tribbles", with another fine performance by William Campbell as Captain Koloth. In "Errand of Mercy" Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock must stop the Klingons from conquering the peaceful Organians, but soon find themselves at the mercy of Commander Kor and his crew. In "The Trouble with Tribbles", Captain Kirk must appease a heavy-handed Federation diplomat, protect a valuable shipment of grain, and contend with the crew of a Klingon battlecruiser on shore leave at the remote space station K-7 near the Federation/Klingon border.
The second DVD includes several classic episodes from "Star Trek: The Next Generation". However, this DVD could have easily contained more splendid episodes about Lieutenant Worf and his family from this television series. In "A Matter of Honor", Commander Riker participates in a Federation/Klingon exchange program, joining the crew of a Klingon bird-of-prey as its new first officer. In "Sins of the Father", Lieutenant Worf finally learns how and why his family perished at the remote Klingon outpost of Khitomer when it was attacked by Romulans; a revelation which could shake the very foundations of the Klingon High Council and the Klingon Empire. In "Redemption, Parts I and II", Worf joins forces with Gowron, in a bloody Klingon civil war that will end with Worf regaining his family's honor, and Gowron as the undisputed Chancellor of the Klingon Empire.
The third DVD includes episodes from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager"; of these, those from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" are among the classic episodes from this series; unfortunately not all the fine episodes about Klingons from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" appear in this DVD collection (A fourth DVD could have easily included another 6 excellent "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episodes.). In "The Way of the Warrior", Worf, newly promoted to Lieutenant Commander, joins the crew of Starfleet outpost Deep Space Nine, just as relations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire grow unexpectedly worse, leading to a Klingon attack on Deep Space Nine led by Worf's erstwhile friend Chancellor Gowron. "The Sword of Kahless" is an Indiana Jones-like quest for a lost Klingon artifact, which pits Worf, Kor (John Colicos in yet another superb portrayal of the role he created on the original "Star Trek".) and the Deep Space Nine crew against a group of renegade Klingons. In "Trials and Tribble-ations", Worf and the Deep Space Nine crew must travel back in time aboard the USS Defiant to stop a renegade Klingon from changing history at Deep Space Station K-7 (the setting for the classic "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble with Tribbles"); without question, this surely ranks as among the funniest, if not the funniest, episode from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", and a hilarious homage to the original "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble with Tribbles". "Barge of the Dead" has Lieutenant B'elanna Torres en route to Gre'thor, the Klingon Hell, aboard the Barge of the Dead, after a serious shuttle accident, and a metaphysical reunion with her estranged Klingon mother.
