DVD Reviews of Stand and DeliverDVD Review: Stand and Deliver...a movie that does exactly that! Summary: 5 StarsWhat an inspiring and touching movie about a mathematics teacher that gave his all to a group of Los Angeles students. Since it's release over 20 years ago,the movie has been an inspiration for teachers and for those who care about kids on how they can succeed in the classroom. Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips and Estelle Harris are part of a first rate cast! I highly recommend this!
DVD Review: This film really delivers Summary: 5 StarsThis has GOT to be one of the most underrated films of the 20th century. James Edward Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Estelle Harris, and Eliot are part of a fine ensemble of actors that make this film enjoyable. But it's not just the acting that makes this film very special. It's also about never giving up on education, and on the future. The plot centers on the true story of Jaime A. Escalante, a high school teacher who will stop at nothing when it comes to making sure that his students succeed. The school that he teaches is in East L.A., where students never follow the rules and where teachers concentrate on strict discipline rather than higher education. Escalante slowly becomes a favorite among his math students, and as the film progresses, it becomes a very touching experience.
I can see that there hasn't been a DVD upgrade for this movie. Let's hope that a Special Edition of "Stand & Deliver" will be arriving soon.
DVD Review: Inspiring! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a movie that is both inspiring and timeless. In a time when education is seen as "uncool" by many people, this shows the pride and happiness in an academic accomplishment. I love this movie and it should be shown to every 8th grade class in the country to inspire kids to stay in school and to strive for what seems impossible. Through education we gain understanding, the ability to reason, compromise and better explain ourselves and understand the actions of others. Teachers should also watch this movie and if they don't have the passion that they see in this movie for teaching, then GET ANOTHER JOB!! The youth of this country is worth it.
DVD Review: Great Video Summary: 4 StarsThis video is an inspiring portrayal, great to show classes--even as part of a curriculum. As a realistic portrayal of Jaime Escalante, there are many shortcomings and facts which were left out--but that is the essence of a dramatization and it is still a very worthwhile movie!
DVD Review: Stand and Deliver Summary: 3 StarsI bought this movie with the intention of showing my students (I'm a math teacher)...totally not appropriate! It had a PG rating on the description. I liked the movie for myself but not PG enough for students.
Description of Stand and DeliverEdward James Olmos's Oscar-nominated performance energizes this true-life story of a Los Angeles high school teacher who drives his students on to excellence at calculus. Based on a true story, this inspiring American Playhouse production stars Edward James Olmos as a high school teacher who motivated a class full of East L.A. barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Test. Not exactly a variation of To Sir, With Love, the film concerns itself with assumptions and biases held by mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and Olmos's efforts to keep his students coolheaded enough to prove them wrong. Olmos, virtually unrecognizable as the pudgy, balding instructor, gives a career performance in this fine piece directed by Ram?n Men?ndez, and written by the director and Tom Musca. --Tom Keogh
