DVD Reviews of Spirit BearDVD Review: Great for High School Students Summary: 5 StarsI bought this DVD to show to my SLD Resource High School students. They often feel powerless with many situations that they face. This showed them that it only takes one and there is power with one voice. They were very attentive during the entire movie. It pleased me that they didn't need violence or an action-packed movie to keep their attention. They stayed awake the entire time!!
DVD Review: Now That's The Spirit Summary: 4 StarsThis is a really good movie for kids and based on a true person/event, but I have to give it 4-stars for the little bumps in the filming. There are several instances where you ask yourself ~ Why was that in the movie? You have to remember that this is a movie for kids, so not every adult is going to enjoy it. But there are so few movies out there for kids to watch that are clean and wholesome, that you just have to ignore the poor acting and moments of terrible filming. It is a Canadian film and there are a few instances of questionable language included. (Burn in he**, a**, bloody, friggin, stupid) This film deals with doing the right thing and fighting for what you think is right. There is a character who likes to shoplift, but the main character does not approve of it. In the end the two teenagers engage in a simple kiss. If your children are into animals they should like this movie. I believe its speed and subject matter is best suited for children 8 and up.
DVD Review: 5 Star Reviews - Are You Kidding Me? Summary: 1 StarsI saw this movie on sale in the grocery store for $5.99. I thought it might be a nice movie to introduce my four year old nephew to environmentalism - and I have a thing for spirit bears.
I immediately looked up the Amazon reviews on my iphone, right there in the store, and there were 14 reviews and 4.5 stars. Sounds good, right?
Oh My God. My boyfriend and I TRIED to watch this film, giving it every benefit of the doubt imaginable. At first it seemed like maybe it had been filmed for a Canadian After School Special - it had that sort of look and feel. Then it quickly went downhill.
The spirit bear shows up (yay!) as STOCK FOOTAGE (LOL!) ~ Stock footage of the bear by itself, different stock footage of the spirit bear fighting a brown bear, then the back of what appears to be a big white furry something interacting with the boy in the movie.
It looks like they didn't even try to make the stock footage match - it's obviously different film.
Oh, then there's the acting. Really bad. Even Graham Greene and Ed Begley, Jr. were really bad, and the kids. Heck, even the bears were bad. I think they realized on the first day of filming just how amateur a project this was going to be and were all just going through the motions after that. They probably signed on and may have worked for scale because it was sold to them as a great true story about a boy who became an environmentalist, stood up to the logging companies and saved the habitat of the spirit bear.
I'm sure if you met any of them at a party and said the words "Spirit Bear," they'd roll their eyes and look at their shoes and say, "Yeah, well..." Even the bears.
Aside from all that, still looking at it from my four year old nephew's point of view, I don't think he could follow it. A couple of times even I said, "What was that shot for?"
I have to admit I didn't watch the entire movie. After twenty minutes I couldn't justify wasting any more of my life watching it, and went to see what was happening on Twitter. ;)
My boyfriend lasted longer than I did, but didn't protest in the slightest when I finally had to ask him to turn it off because just hearing it in the background was annoying.
There is the possibility that it gets better after twenty minutes, but I doubt it.
It won the Canadian DGA Team Award for Outstanding Family Television Movie/Mini-Series AND was nominated for a Gemini Award (Candian Television Awards, yup, I guessed as much) for Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series AND AND AND for Best Original Music Score for a Program or Mini-Series, which is HILARIOUS because we were certain the band in the movie HAD to be the director's brother's band because the music was so horrible and completely out of place in the film.
Canada must have really been hurting for television in 2006. Notice the director wasn't nominated for anything. Sheesh!
DVD Review: Spectacular scenery + loved the movie! Summary: 5 StarsI bought this DVD from the reviews. I was looking for well priced DVDs that looked like they would have beautiful scenery and an enjoyable movie as well. WAow did I hit the jackpot in this movie! I was surprised to find at the end that it was a true story which made it so much more relevant. And the scenery was absolutely spectacular! It was a treat to view this movie! A family film that everyone (even this 51 yr old) will enjoy!
DVD Review: Spirit Bear Summary: 5 StarsThis item is just as described. Arrived quickly and in great condition. Please note: This movie should not be confused with the book, Touching Spirit Bear.
