DVD Review: Whistlefritz saved my life

I mean the title of this review almost literally. I am the father of twin, two-year-olds of a generally wonderful and easy-going disposition. They also have been learning Spanish with the help of our nanny. Two weeks ago, on a day my wife was traveling for business, my nanny unexpectedly called in sick. I was alone and outnumbered. My kids, already understandably wound up about mom away and their nanny absent, were clamoring for attention, and were pretty vocal about it at that. Worse, various of my own work projects that I needed to attend to were exploding. My wife and I are extremely hesitant to allow our kids to watch TV (in fact, it's essentially banned), so I was reluctant to put them in front of NickJr just to buy a couple of hours as Max and Ruby rotted their brains (apologies to the Max and Ruby people, who I'm sure are nice and well meaning). So a perfect solution presented itself: I broke out the Whistlefritz--and Los Animales in particular. It really did the trick. My kids loved it. Even though they knew some of the basic terms already, they were learning a lot more. And I knew it was a winner because they were smiling and laughing throughout. The songs are original and great--so good that the kids asked for particular favorites to be repeated. The format of the show is such that it each piece of new information builds cumulatively, reinforcing what comes before while exploring new themes. And the action moves along nicely. The bottom line is that my kids had a great time and learned a lot (I highly recommend the "repeat play" feature to put the video on a loop), and I was able to get my work done. Fritzie is one ratoncito who is welcome in our house any time.
