DVD Reviews of South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall

DVD Review: Stellar Performances!
Summary: 5 Stars

This reading should establish Brian Stokes-Mitchell as the quintessential leading man in musical theater. His rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" brought the house down -- both in the audience and in my family room!
Reba McEntire was perfectly cast as well. If you enjoy musicals, even though this was only a staged reading, you'll love this production!

DVD Review: South Pacific
Summary: 1 Stars

I was disapointed with this product. It was read from a notebook by the stars. There were no costumes or beautiful sets. I suggest that you pass this one by.

DVD Review: Reba Fans
Summary: 3 Stars

This video is good but I would have rather seen the full production not just them on the stage in front of microphones singing. But any Reba fan would enjoy this video just to see Reba, she does a fantastic job!

DVD Review: A Wonderful Production and a Lesson Learned
Summary: 5 Stars

I first stumbled across this production during a PBS fund drive. They use this DVD often in their fund drives and now I know why. I was never a real fan of South Pacific and I thought it a little 'dated' until I saw this production. Somehow, the interracial casting brings it up to date. I know Reba was on Broadway and got great reviews but I must confess, I nevered pictured her doing anything like this and not with an African American man. Forgive the obvious but truly unintentional racism; I love country music but I just don't remember seeing anyone stepping so outside of that realm to do something so completely different. And she really knocks it out of the ballpark. She is wonderful, natural, at ease on the stage and with her co-star. In great voice too. She holds her own against the reigning leading man of Broadway, Brian Stokes Mitchell, who brings down the house with "This Nearly Was Mine". Their attraction is utterly believable and the ending had the audience (both men and women) and myself in tears. Do yourself and your family a favor and get this wonderful adaptation. You might find yourself, as I did, putting aside pre-conceived notions of what performers are really capable of and learning a little lesson in the bargain. BTW, Reba and Brian reprised their performances at the Hollywood Bowl, in California the following year, to rave reviews there too.

DVD Review: South Pacific, concert version
Summary: 5 Stars

This concert version of South Pacific was recently aired on PBS. Just happened to catch it and was captivated from the get go. The performances by Reba McEntire, Brian Stokes Mitchell and (would you believe) Alec Baldwin were outstanding. Reba embodied small town girl Nellie Forbush and if BSMitchell did not break your heart with his rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" then I don't know what to say. The laughs you will get watching Alec Baldwin doing "Honey Bun" and a number of other funny lines are worth the price of the DVD alone.
Keep in mind that the decision to record this performance was a last minute one and the cast/crew really did themselves proud!

Description of South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall

Broadway, like everyone, loves Reba McEntire. The redheaded Oklahoma firebrand took on the one-night-only concert role of Nellie Forbush on June 9, 2005-the role Mary Martin immortalized in the 1949 Rodgers & Hammerstein classic South Pacific-and the rialto's toughest critics, led by The New York Times' Ben Brantley, instantly surrendered. "Open-voiced and open-faced, she was born to play Nellie," Brantley wrote of the Carnegie Hall benefit performance, adding that the entire production was performed "in a state of nearly unconditional rapture. It was one of those nights when cynicism didn't stand a chance." Happily that enchanted evening can be shared with fans everywhere when "SOUTH PACIFIC" IN CONCERT FROM CARNEGIE HALL comes to DVD. Completing the luxury casting are Broadway and Hollywood icons Brian Stokes Mitchell and Alec Baldwin, as, respectively, French planter Emile de Becque and wise guy sailor Luther Billis. The performance also aired on Thirteen/WNE! T New York's GREAT PERFORMANCES on PBS in April/May.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's glorious score for South Pacific gets a surge of welcome new energy in this 2005 Carnegie Hall concert. Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me Kate, Ragtime) is in spectacular voice singing "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," but the real discovery is country star Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush. McEntire won raves when she replaced Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun, but her performance was never recorded and released to the general public. Now we can understand the raves for ourselves, because McEntire is a joy in the role that features such standards as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." Those used to Mary Martin (which is nearly everybody) will need to get used to McEntire's scoops and twang, but it's not inappropriate for a character hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Jason Danieley (The Full Monty) and Lillias White are both effective as Lieutenant Cable and Bloody Mary, respectively, and Alec Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself any more than he's supposed to as Billis. Because it's a concert performance, the singers carry books and don't wear costumes other than in "Honey Bun" (so the nurses jog in the surf and wash their hair wearing black gowns). But much of the story is conveyed through dialogue excerpts, so the 113-minute DVD is substantially longer than the 78-minute CD. --David Horiuchi
