DVD Reviews of Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition)

DVD Review: Somewhere in Time
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a clasic. It is a movie that you could watch over and over. It has a fan group that meets yearly to discuss and meet fellow actors that were in the movie. I saw this movie when I was in highschool back in 1980 and I still love to watch this movie. It really makes you think and feel for the actors.

DVD Review: Victorian Romance
Summary: 5 Stars

'Somewhere In Time' is a clasic film of such a sentimental form of romance that is becoming extinct. This kind of movie is enjoyable and makes one feel the heavenly desire of the heart for love.

DVD Review: Beyond Obsession. Beyond Time Itself...He Will Find Her. He Sacrificed Life In The Present...To Find Love In The Past.
Summary: 5 Stars

Christopher Reeve ("Superman: The Movie"), Jane Seymour ("Live And Let Die") and Christopher Plummer ("The Sound Of Music") star in this labour of love (as described by Christopher Reeve & Jane Seymour in a celebration/premiere for the 20th anniversary of this tender and classic motion picture). The scene that really got me was when Elise was making her speech about love in the play. Great movie. Sadly, Christopher Reeve had a horrible accidnt in the mid-90's, which meant he would never walk again. I'd have loved to see him and Jane Seymour do another film together. Jane Seymour was radiant as always and excellent as Elise (my favourite character from this movie). Christopher Reeve was terrific, just off his star-making turn in "Superman: The Movie." Christopher Plummer was as authoritarian as he was in "The Sound Of Music" with a touch of menace added. I fail to see why this romantic movie that had very little objectionable material (one "S" word) didn't do well when released in 1980. I highly recommend this heartwarming classic love story to all who enjoy romantic films and or are fans of the actors. I promise, beyond obsession, beyond time itself, you will fall in love. Rated PG.

DVD Review: "Come back to me!"
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I watched this movie, I was in my early 20's and more into action films. This movie had me captivated from the very beginning. Between the love story and the beautiful soundtrack, I found myself completely taken into the film. Since that first time, I've watched it more than 20 times since. The ending always brings me to tears and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The acting is great and the feelings come through very easily. I HIGHLY recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys love stories. If you don't enjoy this movie, there must be something wrong with your heart. Watch and truly enjoy!!!

DVD Review: Wow ...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the Christopher Reeve movie that no one remembers (save for a few) but should. He will always be Superman in our hearts, but he will always be this other handsome stranger to a small percent.

Christopher Reeve is Richard, who while staying at a hotel, comes upon a photograph of a beautiful woman (Jane Seymour). He asks who she is, and is told her name was Elise, an actress who preformed in a play at the hotel in 1912. He is then approached by an old woman who hands him a pocket watch, then says "Come back to me". Astounded by this oddity, he is lost in some kind of dreamlike state, realizing that he and this woman had been lovers in a previous life. Time travel sequences take over, and the viewer is treated to period costumes, bright sunny days, soft white lights making everyone glow, and a love story that could only come from a romance novel. Admit it, you read them, don't you?

This is a sweet love story with just enough fantasy and unrequited love feelings to make you love this story, putting it into one of the best of the best love stories you will ever want to see. Watch it some rainy night at home alone. It's absolutely beautiful, even after all these years when they used to rerun it on cable at all times 20some years ago.

It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there's something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about Somewhere in Time that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weeper that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favorite, with no apologies necessary.

In his first film after the star-making success of Superman, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. "Is it ... you?" she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away.

Based on Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they're in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon
