DVD Reviews of Snakes on a Plane (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series)

DVD Review: 3 stars out of 4
Summary: 3 Stars

The Bottom Line:

A much-hyped film which turned out to be much ado about nothing, Snakes on a Plane delivers exactly what it promises (stupid "so bad it's good" filmmaking and Airport-style camp) and so is not really worth recommending or not recommending: it's bad, but it's up to you to decide if it's bad in a good way or bad in a bad way.

DVD Review: Ouch
Summary: 4 Stars

I hate snakes. Just something about the slithering, slimy serpents that makes my skin crawl. So imagine being trapped on a jetliner with hundreds of 'em--all poisonous. Then imagine being attacked, and being bitten on all conceivable body parts. Draw upon this scenario, with tongue planted firmly in cheek (pardon the reptilian pun) and you've got SNAKES ON A PLANE.

Lordy, is this movie fun. Never, ever, taking itself seriously, this cinematic mad hatter oozes goofiness, nonsense, silliness, ickiness, and thrills 'n chills by the skin-shedding score. Samuel L. Jackson, as an FBI agent assigned to protect an informant marked by the mob, gets to go off in his traditional Samuel L. Jackson way; Julianne Margulies (the stewardess in charge) tries to play off of Jackson's rants, yet in the end has the good sense just to get out of the way. Zany character actor David Koechner, who plays the plane's pilot, manages to maintain a coarse locker room persona--even after he's been bitten more times than Paris Hilton's had dates. Again, it's all fun: good, clean, irreverent fun.

Even the closing credits, featuring a music video by Cobra Starship (who?) performing Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) is a hoot. So watching SNAKES ON A PLANE did make me shudder and squirm, but no matter. I was in B-movie bliss.
--D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning

DVD Review: Was funny and mindless
Summary: 4 Stars

There was some nudity in the very beginning, but that was it. There was some violence with the snakes biting/eating, but otherwise just amusing. A good laugh for adults but would probably cause nightmares for children.

DVD Review: BOOOO....Hissssss
Summary: 1 Stars

I wish I could come up with even ONE reason to see this film...one incident, one unwitting mistake, one camera angle...anything...but I cannot. If you HAVE to see it for some reason, slither away fast and try to erase it from your memory as soon as you can.

DVD Review: Enjoyable and silly fun
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great laugh, with some good action & quite a lot of gore. It's an enjoyably daft blockbuster with some scenes that go back to disaster movie cliches, but in an enjoyable way. Recommended.

Snakes on a Plane knows exactly what kind of movie it is, knows exactly what moviegoers expect from a title like Snakes on a Plane, and delivers the exact pleasures of a movie in which poisonous snakes are unleashed on a plane to kill an eyewitness to murder. Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Long Kiss Goodnight) knows exactly what he's doing in this movie and knows exactly when to pull out the superbad Samuel L. Jackson stare and deliver the infuriated Samuel L. Jackson bellow. The rest of the cast--including Julianna Margulies (ER), Rachel Blanchard (the TV series Clueless), Kenan Thompson (Fat Albert), David Koechner (Anchorman), Bobby Canavale (The Station Agent), and Sunny Mabrey (One Last Thing...)--play their parts with admirably straight faces and deadpan humor. Director David R. Ellis (Final Destination 2, Cellular) gives the movie the much-needed headlong momentum you would expect from a former stunt coordinator. In summation: A perfect piece of self-aware but not self-conscious high camp entertainment, blending comedy and thrills in perfect proportion. --Bret Fetzer
