DVD Review: Baby, That is Rock and Roll!

"Smokey Joe's Cafe: Songs of Leiber & Stoller" can't be called great theater, to be sure, but whatever you want to call it, what a great time it was, and kudos to whomever captured it on DVD. It's like being front and center in the Virginia Theater without having to climb those stairs. I was lucky enough to see it three times, and the audience was standing, singing along, cheering each number and each cast member. Who knew that Leiber and Stoller had written so many of those songs we Boomers grew up with? Elvis, the Coasters and all the original artists came to mind as each song began; but they were overshadowed by the great voices and stage presence of the cast.
"Smokey Joe's" is not in the same league as "Les Mis" or any of the other shows that are in revival, and I'd be surprised if it makes it back "On Broadway (...sorry)." But the DVD is just about as good as being there, watching and listening to that talented cast sing those songs we grew up with again... and again... and again.
