DVD Review: Fast, high-energy, medium impact aerobics; less intimacy with live audience
Summary: 3 Stars
Unlike previous Hip Hop Abs disks that had only one or two routines each, this one disk has four routines, so there's more variety and more choices. The pace is faster than in the first few HH Abs disks, so it's more challenging. As you may have read in my previous reviews of a couple earlier videos, I enjoy Shaun T's routines and the way he motivates with his genuine enthusiasm and encouragement. He always looks like he's having fun, which makes you want to join in. He does an excellent job of keeping up the friendly chatter while guiding the viewer smoothly from one movement to the next. In his earlier videos, there was a warmth and intimacy with him and his small crew working out in a studio.
This disk, however, loses that quality, because there's a large theater audience whooping along to a new and larger crew (all new except for familiar Tania, though I wish a few others from the earlier videos were still involved) that is working out on a garishly-designed stage with flashy lighting. And the costuming is pretty horrendous. Some people may feel more energized by the extra noise created by the crowd and the wilder staging, but I wish they'd return to the studio. Watching the crew working out in a studio allows you to feel as part of their group, but this one makes you feel more like a detached observer. The stage setting also keeps him from slowing things down and breaking down the next movement so the viewer can learn it first, as he did in earlier studio settings. Although Shaun T increases the impact at times, you can still follow Tania, as before, for a low-impact version.
Since I don't have any modern or hip hop dance training, I find three of the four routines on this disk to be a little harder to learn than the ones in previous disks. It helps to start with the Mark, Move & Groove routine to learn certain moves at a slower pace that show up in the other routines at a fast pace. I'm having a bit of trouble getting comfortable with the Cross & Roll. It isn't strenuous - it just involves rapid arm movements that don't come naturally to me.
The beat in the Party Express and Shaun T's Dance Party routines feels faster than in the MM&G. With my rotator cuff and back disc problems, all the fast arm swinging over the head and twisting during the PE was a little too uncomfortable. I can see it's going to take a lot of practice for me to get through an entire number without ending up off balance, because you must shift your body in different directions very quickly, if you want to move smoothly from one movement into the next. The pace of STDP was also fast, and there is plenty of twisting, but there was less rapid arm swinging over the head. I found this routine was easier to catch onto, except for the Cross & Roll part I haven't mastered. It is a longer routine, at 45 minutes, which makes it a good workout.
