DVD Reviews of Shank - Unrated Director CutDVD Review: Juvenile Delinquency, Gang Violence, Homophobia, Sexual Confusion & Ultimately Redemption & Self-Acceptance In The U.K.!! Summary: 4 Stars
I first saw this U.K. indie gay-themed film a few months ago at
a friends' house and liked it very much. It's about a handsome young street
houligan (Wayne Virgo) who runs around with a rag-tag group of vicious street
toughs who vandalize property, steal, rob, and bash innocent gay men.
Secretly though, he has conflicted gay longings and privately immerses himself
in the world of internet gay porn and hook-up sites.
He often meets with middle-aged closeted or openly gay men in seedy areas
of public parks to have sex, then he turns around an assults them after it's over,
really assaulting his own hidden all-consuming desire for M2M relations.
He is able to keep all this under the surface for the most part,
though there is a definite unspoken attraction between himself and one of
the most virulent & macho members in his gang.
The two come close to acting on it a couple of times, once while getting high
together in a parked car, but their fear of being perceived as "gay" and
having their "secret" exposed by the other is too strong.
So they channel their frustrations into more mayhem, vandalism and gay bashing.
This goes on and on until one day when they bash a very graceful, kind,
and somewhat effeminate openly gay exchange student who's just out shopping
and minding his own business. Something about this doesn't sit well inside
Wayne Virgo's character and he jumps to the defense of the bloodied & crying gay boy.
This act automatically alienates him from his gang of thug friends and they
vow revenge and retaliation!
Meanwhile, he and the exchange student who he rescues slowly become freinds
and then of course, lovers. They strengthen their bond, get to know each other,
make hot gay love, and through this, Virgo's character learns to love and accept
himself and embrace who he is. He also hides out there from his old gang's wrath.
**This is the part in the film which I think a few scenes may have been
cut out, because the transition from being a gay-bashing street tough who
is sexually confused to being in a full on open gay relationship is very quick! (-:
For that reason, I took a star from this review for a lag in the story's continuity.**
In the meantime, his old gang members, who are still quite miffed at
their former friends' sudden turnaround, vow to make him pay!
They show up at his old apartment and vandalize it...then they inadvertently
find out about his secret gay internet life and even view videos that were
made by him during his public park play sessions....FUMING, they proclaim
that he MUST DIE NOW!! Most outraged of course, is the macho gang member
who has had the secret crush on him but never had the guts to act on it!
He feels betrayed in more ways than one, and selfishly so! (Closet case!)
Well, without giving much more away, it suffices to say that there
is much more drama, violence, and even a bizzare gay rape scene which
takes place between the miffed macho gang member and Virgo's character
once the gang finally catches up to him and his new found lover.
This happens in full view of the other gang members!---STRANGE!!
Especially since they are supposed to be attacking him & his lover
for being gay in the first place!---(Hmmmmm, paging Doctors Freud & Kinsky!!)
Overall, though this movie is a british indie and they were obviously working
on a limited budget, they still found a way to weave together a story
which is entertaining & engaging, though there are places where the story kind
of jumps around a bit. The gay sex scenes are not done just for sensationalism
or shock value (ala "Shortbus"), but are very natural, as they would be
with two young gay men discovering themselves and expressing their blossoming
love for each other would in real life.
They are very graphic for the most part, but hey, I say if it
bothers you that much, then why are you checking out a gay-themed indie
film in the first place, right? (-:
I give it 4 stars overall and liked it enough to actually
add it to my collection eventually.
