DVD Reviews of Seven PoundsDVD Review: InSearchOfGreatMovies Summary: 5 Stars
Will Smith is absolutely amazing. I've known of Smith since his rap days. I wasn't really into him or rap. His popular portrayal of a happy non-violent African American family member in the "Fresh Prince of Bel...." also caused me to avoid any film or tv shows that he appeared on. Unlike most Americans that welcomed the Fresh Prince as an up close look into middle class to upper class African American families, I despised this false portrayal of what our non-violent culture is like. We're not a bunch of giggling fools that seek to calm the fears of bigoted and ignorant people within the United States and abroad. Instead, we are a people of deep conviction and real life issues that can not be portrayed by the likes of the Fresh Prince or the silly Family Matters, Urkle characters. For years I disliked these types of black shows. I longed for African Americans to portray my culture in a more realistic fashion. It wasn't until I watched the comedy, Hitch, that I finally saw a character that I could somewhat stomach; afterwards, I purchased "In pursuit of Happiness;" this was when I finally started to see Will Smith as an actor that could move me to tears. I heard about Seven Pounds, but I was still uncertain. I wanted to be sure that there was no comedy in this movie, so I researched reviews on this site; once I was satisfied, I took a chance, and I purchased this movie. I would just like to say that I just got through watching this movie a few minutes ago; this makes the 4th time that I've watched this movie, since I purchased it about a year ago. I still cry several time throughout this movie. It never loses it's powerful impact on the viewer. This is one of my favorite movies. I watch it when I'm feeling the burdens of life weighing me down; it always lifts me up, and it makes me want to help someone else, besides focusing on myself.
If you like this movie, you'll also like the "Poor Boys Game." I got this movie for Danny Glover and Flex Alexander, but they are not my favorites in this movie. Instead, my favorite is a white male lead. I will be honest and say that I had no intensions of liking this white man, but one can not help who they like once they open their hearts and minds. His character is similar to the Will Smith's character in "Seven Pounds," because both characters seem to be sad and struggling to continue to live, because the burdens of life seems so heavy on both. They both are loners and don't seem to have friends, because of their past. I told you about the "Poor Boy's Game" character, because I know there are hateful people on this site and others that seek to discourage anyone from enjoying movies that have leads that are not from their groups. I encourage anyone that likes "Seven Pounds" to also check out:
1. Poor Boy's Game
2. Karate Kid 2010 - with Jaden Smtih and Jackie Chan
I already wrote a review for this movies, so I won't do it here.
3. High Lonesome (True Stories Collection TV Movie)
High Lonesome is another movie that I got for Louis Gossett Jr, but gained 2 more favorite actors. The little boy, Joseph Mazzello , stills my heart. As an African American man, I get very angry when I watch movies about the past injustices done to African Americans by whites. It is movies like this that reminds me that I'm on the right path, because I choose not to see all whites as evil, just as I choose not to pretend that my fellow African Americans are faultless in today's society. I warn you, Joseph will tear your heart to pieces, and put it back together in the right way. You can't watch this movie and not want to be a better person. Joseph is an amazing actor. Very few adult actors/actresses can compete with his talent.
4. Missing in America
Missing in America didn't really move me until the end. The little girl seems far to bright to portray the immature character that she's been cast to play. It's not really believable, but closer to the middle and end, she starts to become a more powerful actress. I can tell you that you will be moved to tears at the end, and you will be angry that the movie ended that way it did; afterwards, you may be depressed for a day or so.
Other movies that I like, but they are not tear movies. They do have powerful casts:
5. Only the Strong
6. G - with Blair Underwood
7. Not so easily Broken
This movie has a sad part closer to the end.
8. Chicago Boricua - with Ramses Jimenez - this is a low budget movie, but I truly liked it, inspite of the gangsta, drug, womanizing.
9. Last, but certainly not the least. I love Arabian Nights. This dvd is a medley of different stories that teaches valuable life lessons to all.
