DVD Reviews of Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)DVD Review: Values Like These Seldom Seen On Film Anymore Summary: 5 StarsI was glad to see this finally come out on DVD a few years ago because it's certainly deserving of a better transfer. As most people know, this is the story of World War I hero Alvin York, who went from drunken good-for-nothing to solid Christian man and war hero.
Gary Cooper was a great choice for the role. Few people in his era were better at playing modest, soft-spoken-but-manly heroes. When "York" makes no apology for his 100 percent belief in the Bible, no one challenges him because he's earned the respect from all, believers and non- believers. Cooper's status as an actor helps make that all the more "believable." Sgt. York also gives one of the best examples of forgiveness I've ever seen on film.
Another nice feature of this movie is seeing Joan Leslie in the female lead. and Walter Brennan and Margaret Wycherly in supporting roles. I've always found those three to play interesting parts.
It was a shock to see a few things in this film. I'm just not used to seeing true forgiveness, a hero citing Scripture, and military officers shown in a compassionate light (letting York, with his pacifistic views, decide what he anted to do). What a shame so few films in the last 50 years have highlighted any of those values. Thus, this is a DVD to be treasured, particularly with all the features on this 2-disc Special Edition.
DVD Review: Stand up for what is right. Summary: 5 StarsIt is a very powerful story as it challanges how strong one stands with their own beliefs. Even though Sergent York believed in God and peace and saw the wrongness in taking another person's life, he came to see a bigger picture and that is that not everybody holds to that same belief, infact the the very things that we believe in and hold dear, the right and wrong as we know it can become threatened. What are we going to do about it?
This is the very heart of the movie, it is about putting aside our personal veiws to see a bigger picture, it is about not just giving verbal support, but about putting your life on the line of what you believe and understand, it is about standing up for what is right. It can cost, but it can also come with unexpected rewards. The fact that it is taken of a true story adds greatly to the richness and depth of the story.
The documentry side of this dvd package, adds to the veiwing of the movie and the story behind the movie. Overal the whole package is well put together and well worth watching.
DVD Review: if you are a young soldier wondering how to balance your faith in God with possible active battle in the days ahead... Summary: 5 Starsit is a brave thing to join the armed services to protect and serve our country... I am very thankful to all the men and women who are now serving or have served us in this way... my dad was in the Marine Corps for 30 years, my brother is now retired from the Air Force and one of his sons is currently in the Marines, soon to head off to Afghanistan... being a Christian, the thought of killing another human being is a very sobering thought... eternity is vividly in the picture... so how should a young person who is walking with God in their life, deal with the questions that toss around in your mind??... Sergeant York wrestled with these things... in this movie, the director did an awesome job of showing a very real relationship between the soldier and his God... and I would recommend this film to share with others who may be facing the same questions, either from their past experiences or from the possibilities that lay ahead in the future... this is one of the favorite films of all time of my husband and I... if you haven't seen it yet, you really should see it
DVD Review: Very Pleased! Summary: 5 StarsThe product came timely and I am very pleased with the sellers professionalism and integrity.
DVD Review: Alvin York revies Summary: 4 StarsGood product. Wish the front cover was in Black & White. It appears this DVD is in color, which I did not want. Recommendation: Make the cover in B&W.
Description of Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)Story of World War I hero who captured German position single-handedly. Film also portrays York's earlier life in the mountains of Tennessee. Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. --Tom Keogh
