DVD Reviews of Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)DVD Review: You're Not Behind The Plow Summary: 5 StarsThis is a review for the WB DVD release of SERGEANT YORK (1941) directed by Howard Hawks
and starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan,Joan Leslie, George Tobias, Stanley Ridges and a
great cast of Warner Bros.character actors and supporting players.
Filming the story of WWI hero Alvin York was a dream for producer Jesse Lasky for decades
and the chance finally came during the days of the war in Europe in the late thirties.
It took a lot of persueding to get Alvin York to agree to allow his biography to be filmed, especially the combat segments, but Mr. York decided that America had to prepare for the inevitable coming of war. Eventually he felt that a film showing his initial reluctance to fight in WWI and his reasoning for finally joining in would be a good idea for Americans to see in 1941.
So SERGEANT YORK was made and released to much controversy until the attack on Pearl Harbor. After that, SERGEANT YORK was rereleased and became a smash hit, and no wonder it was successful.
The movie itself is part myth but mostly truthful. the mythical segment lies in the first part about Alvin York's early life in the hills of Tennesse, espcially the manner of
his conversion to that old time religion. It didn't quite happen the way the movie claims but the story is so fitting and entertaining it's hard to complain much about lack of authenticity. This version of the early part of Mr. York's life is almost like a fairy tale, a Hollywood fairy tale. Don't get me wrong, the basic story is true but certain things were embelished to be a little more entertaining.
The second part, York's involvement in the Great War and the incidents that made him
a household name war hero is factual from all the evidence presented and Mr.
York declined most offers to capitolize on his war experiences for profit throughout the following years.
All in all, SERGEANT YORK is a film classic and I hope will be seen at least once
by every American as well as people across the globe. Everyone involved in making this film did a wonderful, sometimes inspired job and all the effort shows in every moment of this outstanding picture.
This biography of a genuine hero is both fascinating and informative, perfect for the younger viewer as well as veteran film watchers. WB did a good job putting this two disc set together, the first disc includes both the movie and a commentary track and the second disc has two documentaries about both the making of the movie and a TCM
1989 biography of the life of Gary Cooper written and directed by critic Richard Schickel and narrated by Clint Eastwood. Both documentaries are well done as is the vintage WB cartoon and humorous short subject. This film has both an English and a French soundtrack as well as English, French and Spanish subtitles. Five stars.
DVD Review: Ultra-Cheap Packaging disrespects a Classic Film Summary: 1 StarsThis review applies to newly manufactured Warner dvds sold after Dec. 5, 2009.
First off, let me make this absolutely clear -- I love this movie, and my gripe is not with the film, or the artists or technicians who originally made this wonderful picture.
My gripe is with the modern-day, greedy studio executives, who have just schemed a new way to stuff even more money into their greedy hands by cheapening the quality of their product.
Apparently, it just wasn't profitable enough for Warner's to make their new dvd cases with the thinnest of plastic, but now Warner's has cheapened the dvd cases even more, by adding huge punched-out hole sections to the front and back of their dvd cases.
I don't know about you, but when I like a movie enough to buy it, I also want to be able to protect it, so I can watch it again in the future.
That might not be as easy as it used to be.
Now, when you open one of these dvd cases, you'll have to remind yourself to adjust your grip to the lightest touch, else you find yourself putting a finger right through the paper jacket, because the plastic that used to be there for support ain't there anymore, and with these ultra thin plastic cases, how many times will you be able to open and close them before they completely fall apart?
This is truly a disgrace, and a great film like Sergeant York deserves better treatment than this!
DVD Review: Sargent York Summary: 5 StarsThis is a very good movie. It brought back some memories of my time in the army. Thought there were many years difference. I would recommend this movie to anyone.
DVD Review: All Time Favorite Summary: 5 StarsI love anything Gary Cooper plays in. This movie is one that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. It is especially meaningful to our family since we are a military family.
DVD Review: Great movie, great hero, great Actor. Summary: 5 StarsThis is one of my favorite old movies. Alvin York was typical of his people and his generation. He was hard headed, but had great integrity. He turned his life around and became a peaceful man. Then he was asked to kill for his country. He was willing to face severe punishment to conscientiously object until he was persuaded (rightly I think) that a soldier for freedom is not violating the commandment against murder. Once his mind was made up, he soldiered with a will, performed heroic deeds, and helped win the war against German aggression. After it was all over, he downplayed the heroic aspect of his action, went back to the Tennessee hills and became a good husband, neighbor, and friend. Gary Cooper was excellent in the strong, silent roles and plays York just as I would expect him to be. He gives a fine performance in an interesting, complex role.
Description of Sergeant York (Two-Disc Special Edition)Story of World War I hero who captured German position single-handedly. Film also portrays York's earlier life in the mountains of Tennessee. Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. --Tom Keogh
