DVD Reviews of Serenity [Blu-ray]DVD Review: quality and value Summary: 5 StarsI received my dvd on time in excellent shape and at a reasonable price. Seller met all goals.
DVD Review: Love it! Summary: 5 StarsI think it is a all around really good movie and in a very high quality format.
DVD Review: Great but... not 100% Shiny Summary: 4 StarsSerenity is ok for those who wanted more Firefly, but it really is one last hurrah. The way the movie was written, there is almost no way they could bring back the show- which is probably a factor in why they didn't. I introduced my wife to Firefly, and she loved it, but wouldn't talk to me for a couple hours after Serenity because now it will change how she remembers it- instead of everyone continuing to go off on missions, the absence of those characters drags you down a bit.
If they hadn't killed off a couple main characters, perhaps they could have relaunched the series once enough momentum had been gained... and delved into more back-story about the characters (including those killed) but, a few years on now, it's obvious that it isn't meant to be and Firefly will remain a cult-classic. One of the best, and shortest lived series of all time, but without much possibility of ever being dusted off for continuation.
Disappointment at the death of those characters aside, it was a great movie, and even their deaths add a gritty "realism" where everyone is used to the episodic formula where everyone goes off on a perilous adventure and everyone (with the exception of the red-shirts) survives for a new adventure. On dangerous missions, not everyone comes home alive (But Gorram it, why not?).
Firefly/Serenity, once you see it all, pulls you in and leaves you starved for more that will never come, but all in all, it's Shiny.
DVD Review: Firefly Summary: 5 StarsJust Fantastic; never tire of seeing this show. Love it and have given it to many friends as a gift. Everyone enjoys it.
DVD Review: Gotta Love It! Summary: 5 StarsI really enjoyed Serenity. Laughs, cries and action in between. It also carried a deep message.
It was a nice closure to the Firefly TV franchise. If only Fox hadn't canceled that show. (*_*)
Description of Serenity [Blu-ray]Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 12/30/2008 Run time: 119 minutes Rating: Pg13 Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon
