DVD Review: Good But Could Be Better

I was hoping for a lot more graphics and information, kind of like the Discovery channel. But this video was mostly going through the life of one sea creature and the things they would encounter. It was still interested and I had learnt some things, but I would have rather preferred a gist of different kinds of sea monsters and more graphics on each one.
It was still good, and I still enjoyed it, but I personally love to see it as much as I like to hear about it. I would have loved more graphics and time in the ocean than with an archaeologist.

My husband took our grandson to see this at the movie theatre and enjoyed it so much that he asked for it for Christmas. We celebrated Christmas early this year and he was so excited when he got it that he started crying. (age 6) It was a really good choice for him. Anyone looking for for a variety of "sea monsters" is going to be disappointed. In the whole film there is exactly one, a large reptile. Otherwise there are dolphin ancestors that are not particularly monstrous and fish. Worse is the constant shifting between effect images and archaeologists and fossils. Personally I hate talking heads in nature films, and this one has too many. The film is short and is pretty low on content. The blu-ray transfer is ok, but it is the sort of thing you can see on TV every week, so why bother with the purchase?DVD Review: Not as good as the BBC series

I got this because I loved the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs. However, National Geographic: Sea Monsters - A Prehistoric Adventure (In 3-D) [Blu-ray] isn't quite as good as that series. Rather, it features clips of paleontologists digging for fossils, with scenes of the CG sea monsters interspliced. As such, it isn't as entertaining or exciting as the BBC series, which shows just the dinosaurs. If you want a great series on prehistoric sea monsters, check out BBC's Chased By Dinosaurs, which in addition to dinosaurs has a mini-series featuring sea monsters that is much longer than National Geographic: Sea Monsters - A Prehistoric Adventure (In 3-D) [Blu-ray]. In the series, Nigel Marvin chases, and in turn is chased by, sea monsters from a variety of different time periods. It's both more entertaining and educational.DVD Review: Not on par with the "walking with" series

This film disappointed me. The animation is sub-par and the feature itself is too short. The background story is weak and the music sounds like it was generated from a MIDI program on a kids PC. Save you money and rent it instead. This film is not in the same class of quality as the "walking with" series.

This 40-minute special explores the less-familiar world of the prehistoric oceans, filled with predatory Platecarpi, gentle Protostegas, and cold-eyed Xiphactini. The story follows a newborn Dolichorhynchops (a short-necked plesiosaur that looks a little like a dolphin crossed with the Loch Ness Monster) as she matures into adolescence and adulthood, surviving encounters with sharks and the fearsome Tylosaurus, who's sort of the T-Rex of the deep. Juxtaposed with these vivid CGI recreations are staged depictions of paleontological digs throughout the 20th century that unveiled the bones of these ancient deep-sea beasties.
