Probably requiring no introduction, Scrooge is the 1935 edition of Dickens' famous holiday tale, A Christmas Carol. Let me first say that there are many, many film iterations of A Christmas Carol (one a decade, it seems), so I wish to convey to you why this particular edition is worthy of your attention in addition to or above the others.
At its heart, A Christmas Carol is a character-driven story about the redemption of one Ebenezer Scrooge. Consequently, the film essentially lives or dies on the strength of the lead actor's portrayal of Scrooge. I will say point blank that Seymour Hicks is the best incarnation of the Scrooge character to ever grace the screen. You will consider him the most bitter, vile and loathsome person you have ever seen, to a degree not even matched by the superlative '51 Sims performance. The strong personality of Hicks' performance--from his appearance to his inflection to his demeanor--draws you in and fully engage you in the events of his redemption, and the utter contempt he evokes for the character in the exposition makes the finale's payoff that much more satisfying.
Secondly, this colorization is a much better effort than the 1980s attempt to do the same with the Sims adaptation. The version included on this disc, in both black and white and color by the way, was apparently re-mastered from the original film reel, resulting in clarity of image previously unseen in bargain basement versions of the same. I believe the re-mastering process also had a hand in the resultant quality of colorization, since it stands to reason that better source material begets a better result. Speaking to the actual colors themselves, the reliance on a bevy of blues really helps set the winter-y, Christmas-y mood essential to the plot.
Special features include a collection of vintage holiday cartoons, making this package a wonderful stocking stuffer to enjoy with your whole family, even those who may not be interested in the classics!

Description of Scrooge - In COLOR! Also Includes the Original Black-and-White Version which has been Beautifully Restored and Enhanced! This classic film is the original and considered the best adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" ever made. Sir Seymour Hicks gives a riveting performance as Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's timeless classic, Scrooge. Scrooge is mean old miser who wants nothing to do with Christmas, bitterly rejecting the company and well wishes of his fellow man. But on this Christmas Eve, Scrooge's former partner, Jacob Marley, an invisible but forceful ghostly presence, visits Scrooge to warn him that his time is running short. Throughout the long, cold night, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future appear to Scrooge, taking him on a journey into the very spirit and magic of Christmas itself. Legend Films is proud to bring you this wonderful story of hope and redemption, beautifully restored and in color for the very first time. This British production of Dickens's Christmas Carol has been eclipsed by subsequent versions, but it stands on its own as a darkly atmospheric (if sometimes regrettably brisk) telling of the beloved tale. Even with the rough quality of existing prints, this Scrooge has a visual intensity that approaches the bold compositions of German expressionism. And in its central role it has a mostly forgotten star: Sir Seymour Hicks, one of the era's celebrated English stage actors. With his gnarled face and flyaway hair, Hicks looks every inch the mean old misanthrope, and his cruelty has a realistic quality missing in some of the more stylized interpreters of the role. Hicks had played Scrooge many times on stage (and before in silent film), and he gets the tenor of every "Humbug!" just right. As a bandy-legged Bob Cratchit, Donald Calthorp is a perfect Victorian illustration come to grinning life. --Robert Horton
